Thread: NI native Badeaux thrilled to coach Cajuns’ track team

  1. Default NI native Badeaux thrilled to coach Cajuns’ track team

Lon Badeaux would like to see the Louisiana track and field program compete regularly for conference championships. Getting the chance to help the Ragin’ Cajuns do that has given the New Iberia native and UL graduate an unreal feeling ...

Did they have an introductory press conference? I was out of the country and missed it.

Sure hope Badeaux sees fit to shake his staff up as well. There may be only one there I would keep ..and he's the volunteer. If Badeaux wants to make a name for himself, and the program, he needs to shake things up, be visible and hire assistant coaches that know their specialties cold, are personable and KNOW how to sell turnips to a cattle farmer and roses to a crawfish farmer. If he doesn't, this crew will sink his ship before it hits open water.

I disagree with your assessment of the current staff, but as we have already discussed that, I will leave it there.

I would hope they keep Paula too. She has done a good job with the jumpers.

Distance will see a new coach.

My understanding is that he was "told his services were no longer needed". Maybe someone can confirm or deny that, but I do know there will be a new distance coach this Fall.

I know the informed thinking on here is that Field Events must be the priority for the Cajuns to win a SBC Championship, and probably so. However, I remember the last time we came even close, 2002 when we missed an Outdoor Championship by something like 1 1/2 pts., we seemed fairly balanced. We scored well in the Jumps and the Decatholon, but also received a victory in the 110m hurdles, as well as other good points in the 2 hurdles events. We also scored 19 points in distanced between the 3000m steeple, 5000 and 10000m (might have been 20, can't remember if Dupe snuck in for an 8th place finish on the last lap).

While we're not going to set the conference on fire in distance events, we at least need to be able to field some guys who can slow the inevitable bleeding against the foreign runners (seems to be alot of Kenyan now; back when I was there, it was more Eastern Europe and Russia). You can get Zach France to squeeze out a few points in the 5k & 10k, and maybe find one guy to get a few in the steeple and someone in can get in the 800m.

Cajun Track will definitely be rebuilding, but hopefully the program can get back on to being a conference contender.

I believe my last post was based around why we need to be able to compete in distance events.

As for CC, I love that sport. I would have run only cross country during my time if I could, but scholarships are given for what you can do on the rubber surface, unfortunately.

3 years after graduating, I jumped in the Ragin Cajun Invitational 4 miler back in 2007 just to get that taste of cross country again. I say anyone can run on a flat, smooth rubber surface. Give me hills, grass, mud, holes, etc!
