LOUISIANA La. - Revenge. The 18th-ranked Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns scored nine runs in the first five innings en route to an 11-0 victory over Southeastern Louisiana here Tuesday night at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field on Second Chance Season Ticket Redemption Night.
The win for Louisiana (42-11) was redemption for the Cajuns' earlier 12-11 extra-inning loss at Southeastern Louisiana (22-27) on March 16 in Hammond.
Louisiana starting pitcher Jered Salazar (6-1) won his fourth-straight midweek start - all four coming with freshman Jonathan Lucroy starting behind the plate - while scattering three hits with three strikeouts over seven innings of work. Brandt Sanders and Kraig Schambough scattered two hits while striking out three batters over the final two innings.
Southeastern Louisiana's starting pitcher Anthony Masson (1-2) received his second loss of the season, allowing three runs on six hits over three complete innings. The Lions' bullpen combined to allow eight runs on nine hits while striking out only two Cajuns over five innings.
Louisiana scored a run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead over the Lions. John Coker lead off the game with a single to center field, extending his streak to 22 consecutive games in which he has reached base safely. Justin Merendino then doubled down the left field line, which advanced Coker to third base. Coker later scored on Josh Landry's RBI ground out.
Jefferies Tatford's sacrifice fly to center field plated Micah Cockrell, giving the Cajuns a two-run lead.
In the third inning, Landry scored on Dallas Morris' RBI single to left field, extending the Cajuns' lead to 3-0.
Louisiana-Lafayette blew the game open with a five-run fourth inning to give the Cajuns an 8-0 advantage. After Cockrell flied out to left field, Alex Preciado singled to center field. Phillip Hawke followed with an RBI double to center field to score Preciado for a 4-0 Cajuns lead.
Tatford then cleared the bases with a two-run home run to right field - his third of the season - to give the Cajuns a 6-0 advantage. After Coker struck out, Merendino singled to center field, followed by Landry who singled to left field. Jonathan Lucroy then plated Merendino with an RBI single to right field.
The Cajuns capped their five-run fourth inning with Morris' second RBI single of the night, which scored Landry to give the Cajuns an eight-run lead.
Louisiana-Lafayette added another run in the fifth, increasing its lead to 9-0. Preciado scored on Coker's RBI fielder's choice.
After scoring nine runs in the first five innings, Southeastern Louisiana held the Cajuns scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings.
Louisiana-Lafayette scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on Leonard Guerrero's pinch-hit two-RBI single to give the Cajuns an 11-0 lead.
Coker, Merendino, Morris and Preciado each had two hits for the Cajuns, while Morris and Guerrero each drove in two runs. Tatford drove in a team-high three runs thanks to a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
Gary Duhe led the Lions with two hits, while David Pitfield, Jason Waguespack and Ross Daniels each had a hit.
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns will close out its 33-game home schedule this weekend when they host Middle Tennessee in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. Friday's first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
