Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun softball coaches wanted to make sure their squad didn't get too caught up in "Senior Weekend" festivities.
They needn't have worried. Heather Bobbitt and Ashley Kirchberg made sure of that.
The two each tossed complete-game shutouts Saturday afternoon, with Kirchberg coming up one out short of a perfect game in her first-ever Sun Belt Conference start, as the Cajuns crushed struggling Middle Tennessee 9-0 and 8-0.
The 13th-ranked Cajuns (45-8, 17-1 Sun Belt) made it look easy in a pair of five-inning run-rule victories, extending their streak of wins over the Blue Raiders (8-39, 1-17) to 23 straight wins heading into today's 1 p.m. regular-season finale twinbill.
Five seniors - pitcher Brooke Mitchell, catcher Joy Webre, infielder Tiffany Hebert and outfielders Jill Robertson and Crystal George - will make their final home appearance in today's twinbill and will be honored pre-game.
"We told our girls not to get caught up in all that," said co-head coach Michael Lotief. "We tried to get them to stay focused and remember it's another conference weekend."
Bobbitt (15-0) and Kirchberg (4-1) obviously listened. Bobbitt allowed three hits and only one runner to second base while fanning five in the opener, and Kirchberg retired the first 14 batters in the nightcap with seven strikeouts. Opposing pitcher Jennifer Dorais blooped a base hit inside the left-field line before Kristine Reed skied the final out in a one-hitter.
