Phillip Hawke goes 4 for 5 on the night with 3 RBI to lead the White team to victory
LAFAYETTE –The White team wins both games of a doubleheader here at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field to comeback and win the annual Red-White Fall World Series three games to two.
A 12-2 victory for the White team in the opening game of the night forced a deciding game five. The White team erupted for seven runs in a big fourth inning to break open a close game and extend the series.
A Brad Saloom 2-run single opened up the scoring in the third inning and a 2-run homerun by Bryan Sneed in the fourth inning highlighted the offense for the White team.
Starting pitcher Jered Salazar (1-0) and reliever Jordy Templet combined to strike out 12 batters in eight innings to secure the win for the White team.
Kevin Ardoin (1-1) got the loss for the Red team after letting up two runs in three innings of work to start the game. Reliever Kraig Schambough was roughed up for eight runs in relief, of which only two were earned.
The White team started where they left off in game five by driving in two runs to open the game off Red starter Matt Pilgreen. Three consecutive singles by Brad Saloom, Bryan Sneed, and Phillip Hawke gave the White team an early two-run lead.
Phillip Hawke hit an inside the park homerun to add two more runs for the White team in the fifth inning off Pilgreen.
Senior Corey Coles (1-0) held the Red team scoreless in four and a third innings on the mound to pick up the deciding game five win for the White team. Coles also drove in six runs and hit for a .444 average for the series.
Thad Montgomery pitched two and two thirds innings in relief of Coles to pick up the save and close the door on the Red team. Pilgreen (0-1) received the loss for the Red team.
Head coach Tony Robichaux and his staff will now have some difficult decisions to make in the next week on which 32 players to keep for the upcoming season.
“I thought both teams did a good job of handling the players, “said Coach Tony Robichaux. “It’s going to be a tough job for us to narrow the team down to 32 players.”
The Ragin' Cajuns baseball team will open the season at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field February 7th against S.W. Texas.
