Supposedly the NCAA is establishing a common start date (last week in February) and pushing the CWS back one week starting in 2008. Actually, I was incorrect. The way they will implement it is such that the CWS will always end before July 1st. Hence, no CWS over July 4th. The CWS will be pushed back a week only in some years (three between 2008 and 2015). My earlier mail was citing the recommendation in the 9/04 meeting which is not being adopted.

From the Report:

(1) Recommendation. That the dates for the Division I Baseball Championship remain the same, except for those years in which the proposed start date for competition, combined with the current date formula for the championship, creates a spring baseball season of less than 13 weeks between the first permissible contest and the Sunday of championship selections (e.g., 2008, 2009 and 2014). In these instances, the championship shall be moved back one week later.
[Note: It should be noted that, at its September 2004 meeting, the cabinet approved moving the championship back one week permanently, rather than for only a select number of years, as proposed here.]

All of this may have the unintended effect of making the RPI an even less effective tool (I know, hard to imagine) in measuring the strength of teams.

I think the unified start date is huge and will get baseball some much needed early season publicity.

July 4th World Series Championship game, a day meant for Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and BBQ. It's a day when everyone has off of work and one that’s tailor tuned to view or listen to a much anticipated Title tilt. I can see the fireworks now . . . .

OK ... without changing the end of the regular season, I still think collegiate baseball deserves the center stage a 4th of July finale would offer.

I would pause more than 2 days between the final bracket gaining entry into the championship series, and the actual championship match up.

If this year was a test case I would wait 7 days for the pitchers arms to recover and hold the championship on the 3rd, 4th and potentially 5th of July

Do you have any idea how much it would cost to house 50 people per team for another week? It will never happen, no school can afford that for baseball.

2 to a room at $60 a night (group rate) for 7 nights would amount to $10,500

However I think you (and others) are missing my point, which is growing Collegiate Baseball. Growing Collegiate Baseball would eventually include massive paydays for the teams at the top.

I contend that within 5 years of a championship series on or through the 4th of July the teams would be in line to receive $500,000 checks. This would make $15,000 in expenses seem like nothing. I could see the other 6 teams in the CWS receiving $100 grand.

I would love to be watching game 1 of the NCAA Collegiate Baseball Championship today.
