  6. UL Football UL Football: Mid-Week Practice Report

The Cajuns came to the Cox Communications Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon for their weekly team meeting feeling down. Head coach Rickey Bustle reminded his team that their goal of a Sun Belt championship remains in tact, but the hunt starts this week. The Cajuns went to practice in the Leon Moncla Indoor Facility on Sunday evening with a renewed drive, know their 0-3 record includes 0-0 in the Sun Belt Conference.

The team worked on Tuesday for 12 periods and on Wednesday for 13 periods, heavily working against their scout team in preparation for Troy’s spread offense. The team will practice on Thursday and walk through at Cajun Field on Friday afternoon.

  18. UL Football Five questions for defensive line coach Shawn Quinn...

How did practice go this week?

Quinn: "On Sunday we tried to focus on the basics and get good at the base fundamentals. Blocking and tackling – assignment football - wins games. We have to play better run defense and that’s been emphasized this week. We implemented the game plan starting on Tuesday. We’ve had good practices and the guys understand the game plan.”

    What are the Cajuns positives?

Quinn: "We are playing at home and we continue to play hard. I think we’ve played really well at times, but we need to be better on third down. We have a fresh start because we are 0-0 in conference play.”

Is it any tougher to open conference play against the team that was the preseason favorite?

Quinn: "Yes and no. Yes, because we are playing a great football team. No, because we all realize that we have to bring our ‘A’ game to have a chance to win. They might be better offensively than anyone we’ve seen all year. Defensively, they are very athletic. They present a lot of challenges on both sides of the ball. We have to play mistake-free football.”

How can the Cajuns become a better second half team?

Quinn: "We are losing the field position battle and the turnover battle. We have to get stops and create turnovers on defense and we have to win the field position battle. Both sides of the ball have to win third down.”

What does Troy do well and how can the Cajuns combat that?

Quinn: "Everybody can run. They have great team speed and athleticism. We have to make their offense one dimensional. We have to take away the big play, be effective in run defense, pressure the quarterback and create some turnovers.”

  19. UL Football Fenroy's status in doubt for Saturday

The running back situation improved slightly for UL's football team Wednesday, with backup tailback Deon Wallace taking a number of snaps and upgraded to probable for Saturday's Sun Belt Conference home opener against Troy.

Wallace had not practiced since suffering a triceps injury in the second quarter of last Saturday's 38-17 loss to McNeese State.

Regular starter Tyrell Fenroy, though, missed practice for the third straight session with a sprained ankle, also from the McNeese game, and is listed as doubtful for Saturday's 6 p.m. kickoff at Cajun Field.

"We all have to step up with Ty down," Wallace said. "He's a great back, but the rest of us have to step up and keep rolling."

  20. UL Football Re: Official Louisiana-Lafayette Injury Report (as of Wednesday, September 19, 2007):

Wednesday practice focusing on Troy's spread

Most of UL's 13-period practice Wednesday was spent working against scout-team competition simulating Troy's spread offense and special-teams formations.

"It's hard to simulate a lot of what they do," said Cajun coach Rickey Bustle. "Working against their offense, you can't panic. You have to stay in your game plan. They're going to complete a lot of balls, so you can't get impatient."

By Sun. evening, rumors were flying about Hundley leaving and it seems that posts on this sight blamed everyone including the band, mascot, stadium announcer, radio announcer, coach, the QB, etc. By Monday, the rumor of Hundley leaving was confirmed in the media and all doom and gloom overshadowed these pages. Well, here's how I see it.

Firstly, no QB will stand a chance if the O-line is not stopping the rush, especially a pocket passer. Without a pocket, you had better have a Des Mo back there scrambling to make things happen. Des Mo plays with great heart and if given a little protection, he has both run and passed effectively. He has the heart of a lion and I admire his ownership of any mistakes he makes on or off of the field. Last year, he waited patiently in the wings while Babb did his thing. When interviewed about should he be playing more, Des Mo stated that it was Babb's turn to be at the helm. I would have loved to have seen MD as QB more last year, but he backed the program and served the team anyway that he could. Hundley's bailing out early in the season tells me that he was not ready, perhaps not mature enough. I wish him well and hope he learns the virtue of patience and the concept of being on a team. I would have loved to seem him play in a year or two.

Secondly, we have some great talent on this team with great drive and spirit. Tyrell Fenroy's second efforts are incredible...I hope he recovers quickly and is able to continue chalking up big yards. Wallace is strong and runs hard. Cherry is super quick and with a little experience, he will learn to adjust to make the big catches that bring us all to our feet. Des Mo is the same QB who stepped up and led this team to a co-championship after a very rocky start two years ago. He is the man to lead this team here and now.

Now my glasses aren't completely rose colored for the Cajuns! If the O-line does not open holes for the backs and provide pass protection, we will have no outstanding players. Receivers need to make those catchable catches and adjust on the long pass. The D needs to put pressure on the opposing QB and shut down the third and long conversions. I like Coach Bustle and think he has been a gentleman coach, perhaps to a fault. It's time to feed off of the fans emotions and GET EMOTIONAL Coach Bustle. Fire up that team and let's get back on track.

Finally, we should not thumb our noses at McNeese. You don't get a no. 6 rating in Div AA by being a mediocre football team. They were quick and highly motivated and will be all season. It's painful to say so, even after I made good on a lost bet last night when I had to wear a McNeese shirt at a meeting in L.C. I still have hives where that shirt contacted my skin. With all of that said, I count my blessings of living in Lafayette and having my undergrad degree from U.L.L.

Shake off those first 3 games. We start conference play Sat. 0-0 against a strong Troy. If our boys find the heart to play four quarters of football firing on all cylinders, it will be one hell of a game. We have a lot of football left to play this season. I'll see you at Cajun Field. _

Fight on Cajuns, fight on to victory
    for the red and white.
We will sing of triumph and glory
    for our team tonight.
You will hear the rage of the Cajuns
so let's give a YELL! (Ayeee!)
Hustle up and bustle up and fight on to victory.
    Geaux UL!

I am wondering if this is really Bustle?
If it is he sounds like he is pumped and knows we can still win, which I am grateful for!

I am surprised the coaches read these boards.
There was only one thing I didn't like in that post and its toward the end.

    Geaux Cajuns!!
