Default What is a Moral Victory?

What is a moral victory and why are some so quick to latch on to them and others so quick to run?????? Moral Victories have nothing to do with being Victorious and have even less to do with being Moral. In a fight to the death if the winner lets the loser live that might be a moral victory?!?!?! He is victorious and shows morals by letting the opponent live. It was the moral thing to do. The chance to do the moral thing is always out there, but if you couldn't get the upper hand in the fight the opponent could claim the moral victory for himself simply by surviving. Moral victoriees are survival of the less fit surviving to fight another day.

Sure I thought that our guys played their asses off and I give them props for that, but I will never be happy with a loss and I am pretty sure the players won’t be either.
I think we have advanced the program enough that we don't need any "moral victories". Just the real thing! Geaux Cajuns!!!!!!

  3. UL Football Re: USC game was a moral victory.

Well I'm thinking it is a term run amuck.

First of all, when you combine two words they don't necessarily keep their original meanings. It is fairly obvious that the Victory part does not mean the team won the game, so victory simply cannot mean VICTORY.

As far as the other word "Moral" I have to believe that originally it was referring to mood as in morale. A "Morale Victory" would be something that boosts morale.

If a fan or player or coach fully expected to lose by 29, no one can tell me their morale isn't higher when they realize they could have won the game. They might be mad at themselves for not actually getting the win, but when your confidence goes up after a loss you captured something from that game! You captured a morale boost which is nothing short of a Morale Victory.

As far as “Moral Victories? I think they happen all the time. It’s when you do the right thing, but I don’t think it has anything to do with losing in sports. That is a term run amuck.

  7. UL Football Week 1 FB Award Winners

LOUISIANA La. - Each week Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns football coaching staff honors its outstanding performers from the previous weeks’s game by designating them as Players of the Game.

This week’s Offensive Player of the Game award was given to junior quarterback Michael Desormeaux for his efforts at South Carolina. Desormeaux led the Cajuns with 116 yards rushing - his second career 100-yard game. In five games as the starting quarterback, Desormeaux has 69 carries for 467 yards. He was also an efficient 12-for-19 passing for 63 yards.

The Defensive Player of the Game was awarded to Jarrett Jones. Jones’ recorded his first career interception, stopping a Gamecocks drive short of the end zone. The Cajuns’ offense took control and scored their first touchdown of the game following Jones’ interception.

The Special Forces Player of the Game honors went to Jason Chery. Chery was also named the Sun Belt Conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week Monday. He made every solo tackle on special teams for the Cajuns Saturday night. UL kicked-off three times, with each tackle coming from Chery, holding the Gamecocks to less than 20 yards per kickoff return. During punt coverage, every punt was fair caught or downed, except one, which was returned for only one yard before being tackled by Chery, who boasts 35 career tackles in 24 games.

The Offensive Scout Team Player of the Week was Chris Masson. The Defensive Scout Team Player of the Week was Kyle Cox

The Cajuns honored Antwyn Zanders with the Hammer Award for the biggest hit on defense. The Kuhuna Award for special teams biggest hit was awarded to Grant Fleming.

Can't remember if I went with the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor, Napolean trying to seize the Alamo, the Chinese and the blitzkreig, or the US Revolutionary war against the Swiss, but I'm sure I dropped an "always remember, never forget" line in there somewhere.

I'll take a "moral victory" over an "immoral loss" any day of the week.

In a nutshell this is just more fan or media-speak.

The players and coaches play to win. We know that but there are times when they can hold their heads high in a losing cause (see Ark St. vs Texas). There are other times - like against Texas A&M last season - when you just want get past it without as little verbal reflection as possible.

Even if it is an accepted phrase, I don't like using it. Trust me, the football team is after flat out wins, not moral victories. The fans and foes can chatter infinitum about the upside/downside of a game.

You want to know the flipside of our playing a "good game"... South Carolina got the win, but probably have fans saying it was a "moral failure". Well, Bubba actually said "hey man, em cocks batter stap it up cum SEC play er weer gonna be inna worl da hurt".

No matter how that game gets sliced, I had many posititve take-aways from the game. I'm not going to remove the significant achievements that happened in that game, by some really tough whiner blabbing about accepting nothing but complete victory. I've never found a person that talked about "failure is not an option" that had a winning record in their own life. They always superimpose that requirement on something or someone else.

    On to the Bobcats...
