Thread: The Book: 2007 Football

  1. UL Football Ragin' Cajuns look to get tight end involved in offense

During fall scrimmages, throwing to the tight end was a regular feature of UL's offensive attack. But the last scrimmage was also the last time that the tight end corps provided a significant target for Cajun quarterbacks.

In four games, only two players listed as tight ends on the roster have caught passes. Offensive tackle Jesse Newman has as many catches (one) as do regular tight end starters Kevin Belton and Erik Jones.

"It's not like we haven't had the calls in there," said tight ends coach Troy Wingerter. "Every week we talk about getting the ball to the tight end more. Every day, period two, we're working with the quarterbacks."

"We had several called on Saturday to go to the tight ends," said Cajun coach Rickey Bustle. "For one reason or another, they didn't work out like that."

Here's a hint. HOW ABOUT THROWING TO A TIGHT END ON 1ST DOWN WHEN NOBODY EXPECTS IT.

Now, everybody pile on me because I am not a coach and they (UL coaches) have everything under control, and if I think I can do a better job then why don't I ........... BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.............

You don't think they can figure out "run Fenroy up the middle on 1st and 2nd then throw on 3rd to try to pick up the 1st"?

All this shows is that the Crapbelt is still the worst conference in the country.

We all know this is the lowest ranked D1-A conference. But it is only a few years into its existence. There is no way we could be in any other conference at this time. The only option we have right now is to grow the SBC (in quality, not in quantity). It has made improvements, especially in the upper portion of the conference. That is the first step. Next is to raise the level of the rest of the programs. When you look at it, how many conferences don't have poor programs on the lower end of their conference. Maybe some of the top 2 or 3 conferences have a very small number, but most of the rest have multiple bad teams on the bottom half to third of their conference.
