The Minneapolis Symphony Brings Honor to S.L.I.

With the presentation of Beethoven’s 'Ninth Symphony' by the Minneapolis Symphony under the direction of Henri Verbrugghen comes the announcement that Ralph Squires received the Philharmonic Scholarship following the suggestion of his instructor, Miss Corinne Meyers. Miss Meyers received a check for three thousand dollars and she was requested to give it to the student to whom she was most vitally interested. Out of thousands of students in New Orleans Ralph Squires was chosen.

This news brings us the realization of something which we knew would come to pass because Ralph's four years at Southwestern were musical years. It was Mrs. Harvey P. Hopkins who first started Ralph on his career as pianist. That was in '21-'22 when the Musical department had scarcely emerged from its mystical state and Mrs. Harvey Hopkins was teaching Piano and Voice here for the first time. Both Ralph and the Department have gone many many leagues farther since then. Ralph was school accompanist and he was also president of the Student Body in '24-'25. He was a wearer of the 'S' emblem and he belonged to the Sigma Pi Alpha fraternity.

Ralph is planning on going to Berlin next September where he will begin work under ??

There is no doubt that he will win more recognition in Europe. The Ninth Symphony, one of the greatest and most beautiful pieces of music ever written, is given on two or three times in a Century. New Orleans heard the Symphony for the first time. Beethoven's one hundredth and fiftieth anniversary is being celebrated this year.

I was in the Ralph Squires auditorium a couple of weeks ago.

Unfortunately, I know nothing about him...
