Thread: Lady Cajuns Finish on a High Note and a Winning Record

  1. UL Tennis Lady Cajuns Finish on a High Note and a Winning Record

LOUISIANA La. - Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns tennis team became the first since 2002 to finish the regular season with a winning record as they defeated Arkansas-Little Rock 4-3 at Cajun Courts Saturday. The win also gives the Cajuns a home record of 7-2 after their fifth straight home victory.

Highlighting the Cajuns afternoon was senior Susan Linden. Linden was presented with a plaque to commemorate her final home match as a Cajun and honor her for her four years of play. She treated the fans to a victory in her last home match of her career by defeating Ellie Vicary 6-2, 6-2.

“I was just thinking about winning the point for the team,” Linden said about her final point as a Cajun. “When I went to shake hands and then when I sat down it kinda hit me that this was my last home match.”

Also victorious for the Cajuns were Kimmie Lyles, Tammy Day and Celine VanWaydeveld. Lyles knocked off Laetitia Bourgeon 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, to boost her win total to 10 for the spring, while Day defeated Outi Jarvinen 6-4, 6-0, to garner her 7th win of the season. VanWeydeveld needed only two sets to take down Jenna Hirdle 6-2, 6-0.

Although the Cajuns lost the doubles point, the team of Day and Chanell Meijer were victorious. They defeated Hirdle and Jarvinen 8-4 to finish the spring with 9 wins total.

“It was tough to lose that doubles point,” associate head coach Lisa Jackson said. “But I am proud of the way the girls battled back, especially Susan (Linden). This was a special moment for her.

“Now we are 3-1 against Sun Belt Conference teams and that will just help with our seeding and our confidence. That is what tennis is all about.”

The Cajuns return to action Thursday, April 21 as they head to Mobile, Ala., to play in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
