  8. Default Ardoin-led Cajuns shut down UNO

NEW ORLEANS - Kevin Ardoin knew from Friday's first pitch that it was going to be a successful night.

"Right from the start, all my pitches were working," Ardoin said. "All I wanted to do was keep them in the zone."

The senior righthander did that to perfection, checking New Orleans' red-hot Privateers on six singles and striking out 12 in leading Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns to a 6-0 victory.

The win put the Cajuns (30-7, 5-2) into undisputed possession of first place in the Sun Belt Conference and gave the visitors a leg up in the weekend series that continues today at 1 p.m. at Privateer Park.

Ardoin (8-1) faced only 33 batters in his 126-pitch complete game, and only one Privateer managed to reach third base in the game. Almost fittingly, Ardoin fanned four of the last five batters he faced after inducing a double-play ground ball in the eighth inning.

"He was dominating tonight," said first-year New Orleans coach Tom Walter. "We got six hits, but not many of them were hit hard. He was able to throw all three pitches for strikes and he worked from ahead all night."

UNO (10-22, 6-4) entered Friday's play leading the Sun Belt in team hitting (.358) in conference games.

  9. UL Baseball Morris And Ardoin's Mvp-like Performances Lift Cajuns To A 6-0 Victory At Uno

The win clinches Louisiana's fourth-straight 30-plus win season

NEW ORLEANS - Dallas Morris gave an MVP-like performance, going 4-for-with a home run and a season-high-tying four RBI, to lead the 21st-ranked Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns to a 6-0 victory over New Orleans here Friday night at Maestri Field.

Louisiana starting pitcher Kevin Ardoin (8-1) continued his stellar senior season, throwing his second complete game and his first shutout of the season. Ardoin struck out 12 batters, while scattering six hits with one walk. Ardoin (294) needs six more strikeouts to become the third pitcher in school history to reach 300 career strikeouts.

The win clinches the fourth-straight 30-plus win season (39-23 in 2002, 30-30 in 2003, 34-23 in 2004) for the Ragin' Cajuns (30-7, 5-2 Sun Belt). New Orleans (10-22, 6-4 Sun Belt) has now lost five of its last seven games, including its last three home games.

Louisiana plated the first run of the game to take an early 1-0 lead. Josh Landry drew a one-out walk. Jonathan Lucroy then singled to center field, advancing Landry to second. After John McCarthy flied out to second base, Morris singled to center field, scoring Landry to give the Cajuns a one-run lead in the first inning.

Ardoin shut the door on the Privateers in the first three innings, allowing one base runner while striking out four UNO batters.

The Cajuns would add another run in the fourth, increasing their lead to two runs, 2-0. Justin Morgan bunt singled down the third base line and advanced up two bases to third on T.J. Baxter's throwing error. Phillip Hawke plated Morgan with a sacrifice fly to left field.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Jason Schwab's single through the middle of the infield broke up Ardoin's early no-hitter. Ardoin got out of the inning when designated hitter Paul Smyth grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.

Dallas Morris' RBI double to center field increased the Cajuns' lead to 3-0. John McCarthy doubled to right field, before Morris plated him with his second RBI hit of the game.

Ardoin continued his dominance into the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In the seventh, Ardoin struck out Alex Webster for his eighth strikeout of the night, which moved him into a third-place tie with Eric Templet (290 Ks) on the school's all-time list.

Morris continued his stellar offensive performance in the eighth with his fifth home run of the season - a solo effort - to give the Cajuns a 4-0 advantage. Micah Cockrell's mammoth 415-foot solo home run to center field increased the Cajuns' lead to 5-0.

In the Privateers' half of the eighth, Ardoin struck out Schwab to pass Templet for sole possession of third place on the school's all-time list.

In the ninth inning, Morris drove home his fourth run of the night with an RBI single through the left side that scored McCarthy for a 6-0 lead.

Morris posted his first four-hit performance of the season. Cockrell went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, while Lucroy and McCarthy each added two hits.

Mike Costantino recorded the only multiple-hit performance for the Privateers, going 2-for-3.

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns will continue their three-game Sun Belt series with the Privateers on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1p.m.
