This, of course, is just Board fodder, but for those interested, here are a few quotes off of the LA Tech Board:
"This would be great for Tech. It will place Tech alongside LSU and make the two schools peer institutions in the state. Their will be 2 flagship reserch instituions, one in the south and one in the north. Getting Shreveport helps Tech in athletics, more television sets, larger enrollment and more support from the Shreveport community all vital for CUSA. We all need to get behind this in a big way."

"Moving to the LSU System would truly separate Tech from UL and ULM. The fear I have is if massive budget cuts have to occur in the future, would Tech take the lion's share of cuts as opposed to LSU?

Tech has expanded into the Shreveport-Bossier City market in recent years with the Technology Transfer Center, executive MBA classes, and engineering curriculum agreements with BPCC. Adding the LSU Hospital, Medical School, and LSU-Shreveport under the Tech umbrella would be huge."

"To have a Louisiana Tech Health Sciences Center with these graduate programs would be HUGE:
    - Medicine
    - Physicians Assistant
    - Physical Therapy
    - Occupational Therapy
    - Speech-Language Pathology
    - Communications Disorders
    - Cardiopulmonary Science
    - Clinical Laboratory Science
    - Biochemistry and Molecular Science
    - Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
    - Cellular Biology and Anatomy
    - Microbiology and Immunology
    - Molecular and Cellular Physiology
    - Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Neuroscience
    - Medical Technology
    - Public Health
    - Health Sciences
    - Biomedical Science

    Hospitals:
    - LSU Medical Center in Shreveport
    - Feist-Weiller Cancer Center in Shreveport
    - E.A. Conway in Monroe
    - Huey P. Long in Pineville

    +29 clinical departments
+Millions of dollars in research funding
+Satellite university of LaTech-Shreveport with between 4-5K students

Oh yeah, and it's the LARGEST EMPLOYER IN SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER!"

"This would be a very good thing. It also adds more to the story why Dr. Martin spoke at the spring graduation, and why he and DR both made comments to Tech being the flagship University of North Louisiana and LSU the flagship of South Louisiana."

"I have heard someone in higher education in Baton Rouge say Tech is the best kept secret in the state."

    "I don't trust them either.
LSU would disassemble Tech piece by piece every time budget cuts came around.
Right now, we're the jewel of the UL system. We've survived the budget cuts better than the others.
Don't be so quick to get into bed with the enemy."

"If it is on the up and up, then this would be great for TECH. Possibilities to move us to a Tier I Institution and get rid/separate us of the warts in Monroe and Lafayette. Moreover, we will have to keep the TECH name or all bets are off…no negotiating on this one!"

    "LSU System
    LSU
    LSU-Alexandria
    LSU-Eunice
    LSU Ag Center
    LSUHSC-New Orleans
    Paul M. Hebert Law Center
    Pennington Biomedical Research Center
    Louisiana Tech
    LaTech-Shreveport
    LaTechHSC-Shreveport

    UL System
    UL-New Orleans
    UL-Lafayette
    UL-Monroe

    Nicholls St.
    Grambling St.

    SU System
    Southern
    SU-New Orleans
    SU-Shreveport

"We would become the 2nd largest institution in Louisiana.

    Enrollment (Fall 2010)
    11,804 - Louisiana Tech
    694 - Tech Barksdale
    4,504 - LaTech-Shreveport

    8,858 - ULM
    7,093 - Nicholls
    4,994 - Grambling
    907 - Centenary"

"I just don't want to see us jump into this and suddenly become LSU's whipping boy. I have a feeling we would be more like the red-headed step child instead of the "flagship of North Louisiana."

"This is me being an optimist, but I see this having the opposite effect. If we join the lsu system, then we would be undoubtedly the flagship of the north. The UL system would have nothing left. Tech would have N. LA, and lsubr would have the south. Sounds like a good idea to me."

It makes sense for Tech and is probably efficient, bit this would most likely give them a strangle hold on the #2 position in the state.

You guys need to take a deep breath and remember who we are dealing with here. Historically, the "flagship" has screwed every other institution in their system. I don't think it will be any different for the necksters. While it may benefit them in the short term they are very likely in for a hose job in the long term. Look at UNO. As LSUNO they earned a god reputation and grew their enrollment. when they got too big for their britches LSUA&NC fought their efforts to become UNO. Eventually UNO prevailed but the flagship slowly strangled them and stymied their growth and their potential. Just look at the comments of their former chancellor for evidence of that. And if the necksters think that they will be able to grow their school and athletics they need to keep in mind that anything they wish to do has to be approved by the LSU board of Supervisors now. That board will not be as friendly as the UL Board. Improvements will only be allowed to the point LSUA&M thinks it doesn't pose a threat to them. The necksters might want to be careful what they wish for.

I agree with this...and if you read the Tech board comments, they see it too.

Rule #1 -- NEVER trust the LSU board or anyone associated with that university. EVERYTHING they do or will do in the future is to benefit that ONE university...and they will do it at the expense of anyone else and everyone else...including Tech.

    But, hey..."how bout dem Tigas?"

I like the comment in the Advocate article about how only Tech and LSU were involved in the "Future of Louisiana Research Universities" forum. That's rich considering overall research numbers. Seems like LSU's chancellor and Reneau are buddying up pretty good.

You might be right. But, where would that leave UL and the UL System? UL would then clearly be the leading university in the UL System. Would the UL System then consider UL as the flagship and drop the "at Lafayette" as someone else already posted? How does UL improve its academic position as a result?

UL just keeps doing what UL has been doing, which is doing more with less and excelling at it. That "flagship" title will never materialize although it may be the de facto case as we will be the leading university in the system.

I like these comments from those listed from the nech board.

"This would be a very good thing. It also adds more to the story why Dr. Martin spoke at the spring graduation, and why he and DR both made comments to Tech being the flagship University of North Louisiana and LSU the flagship of South Louisiana."

“It will place Tech alongside LSU and make the two schools peer institutions in the state. Their will be 2 flagship reserch instituions, one in the south and one in the north.”

First off you just have to love the irony of a nechster crowing about being a flagship "reserch instituions" Yea-haw, ah wunder ifn they will teached guzintas too?

And the idea that they will be a peer to LSUA&MC is absurd. LSUA&MC does not consider anyone in this state as worthy of being their "peer". Additionally, the idea that they will be a flagship of north Louisiana while LSUA&MC contents itself with being the flagship of the southern part of the state is ludicrous. Currently, LSUA&MC considers itself and has codified it into law that they are the flagship for all of Louisiana. And these nechsters think State is going to cede the northern half of the state to them? The nechsters better wake up and smell the coffee. The LSUA&MC Chancellor's talk at their commencement about them being peers and sharing flagship status is the political equivalent of "Of course I'll respect you in the morning, baby."
