UNO to UL system

I wonder if the provision in the original bill that mandated UNO to be D1 in sports was in the version that passed? So far there is no report on this vote in the Picayune.

I made the comment in a thread last week that it didnt bother me taking them in, but I am not a fan of having to subsidize D1 athletics program that is not supported. But the thing about that is, if they came in, they'd likely be receiving the same state dollars as other D1 programs or however its broken down in LA. I would only have an issue if they received additional money from the govt, on top of the base, to help them survive.

Of course, if a 1-AA or lower division program receives less from the state, then I'm all for them dropping down.

Sorry, but all I see is Jindal (aka lsu!) dumping an inferior commuter school into a system that's already bloated and can't take care of their own, just so lsua&mc@br won't have to deal with them anymore. I see no good whatsoever coming out of this.

If they do want to go D1, just don't let them back in the conference. They may not have any other options and will stay DIII. For that matter, we need for UALR to find another home so the SBC can have all teams in all sports, 1A football being the key area.

_ Actually...I received an e-mail from some people in the know at Martin Hall.

They think this may not a bad move, because:

1) It strengthens the UL System bargaining position.

2) It will foster research collaboration between the schools. Apparently Dr. Savoie and the UNO chancellors are friends.

3) Also, funding will not be effected, because it is done on a formula basis and not system basis.

4) Finally, the people at Martin Hall actually believe it will help our influence in the NOLA area. UNO serves the city of New Orleans almost exclusively, and them changing systems will not change that. _

Dr. Savoie is a good friend with the previous Chancellor of UNO, Ryan, who was fired by LSU's Lombardi. Ryan was a big proponent for moving out of the LSU system.

I see some changes in position on the board, now that we have an academic perspective from UL.

Reducing the power of the LSU System and increasing the power of the UL System, puts the momentum on our side with some of the benefits as noted in the email leak.

Here is, I think, an interesting note regarding UNO and our name. I believe the law says that in order for a school to have the UL name, at least 2 schools must have the name but with the city tag. If UNO becomes ULNO, that would be 3 schools. Would that give any credence to UL dropping the Lafayette while the other two schools have the city tag? UNO was once LSUNO and now might be ULNO. How would they go about changing their name under this new law? Could we follow that same process at the same time in dropping the Lafayette from our name? Just a (wishful) thought.

It makes PERFECT sense to me.

I like the creativity, but UNO did not like LSUNO, so it is unlikely they would pursue ULNO.

I would like to see LSU Shreveport merged into LaTech, but that is unlikely, although it has been discussed.

I just did a story on this for KPEL. According to the people I interviewed, this is a good thing. I agree with them.
