While the 2 schools had similar final records 4-8 to 3-9, the level of play for the whole season was decidedly different.

    Arkansas State:

    - was 3 points away 6 wins
    - was 10 points away from 7 wins
    - scored 26 on National Champ Auburn
    - had 2 point loss to Indiana and 10 point loss to Louisville
    - beat FAU by 21
    - beat MT by 27
    - outscored by only 9 points for the whole season

    Louisiana:

    - was 2 points away from going 1-11
    - was 9 points away from going 0-12
    - loss to WKU by 33
    - loss to MT by 20
    - was outscored by 176 for the whole season

    2 similar records

    2 very different seasons

It isn't that we don't have SBC "all conference" players returning. We pulled a vacuum last year and that is about as far as anyone outside of ourselves investigates our program. I also believe that Bustle's extended stay with lackluster results made sure that anyone we recruited under his watch was guaranteed low individual assessment. No one other than Ladarius stands out as a stud... and that is purely from his stats as a TE... in the eyes of the rest of the world. They have very little first-hand knowledge of his abilities. I firmly do not believe that the SBC, other than 2 or 3 programs, have any better talent than we do.

Regardless of how bad we were last year, this tally of SBC talent is not indicative of our returning talent. If we don't have any better talent than Phil Steele indicates... then Bustle was a worse recruiter and better coach than I thought. He was an average SBC recruiter and an average SBC coach.

I know most don't want to start out with too high of expectations of Hud, given that it's his first year and he is supposedly working with less than spectacular talent. He'll get much much more out of our team, right off the bat. There may be no substitute for talent... but hard work runs a close second.

The one thing that we will not see as we did the past 9 years is a grandfatherly coach that consoles players as they leave the field after 3 and out. As for our defense, besides being injury plagued (and we all need to stop forgetting that as a huge factor in our outcomes) when these guys start thinking they are dominant... and Hud will easily have them thinking so... it will change the results on the field in a split second. I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever.

Agree with this to a point. The line play is not at a SBC average. It is well below average. Was it lack of talent, injuries, or coaching? I don't know, but we will not make noise in this conference until those positions are shored up.

If we were evaluating whether we have the top tier talent in the SBC, it would be an easy discussion. We are talking about the median in the SBC. We have that right now. We should easily have 6 to 9 players on his all conference team.

As for what will improve this program... talent, coaching, limited injury... it is all of the above and more... but I think intense, focused coaching is going to have the greatest initial impact.

If the returning talent manages to win better than .500 of our conference games next year... I'd like Phil Steele to explain it. I'm going to leap ahead. The Cajuns are going to win better than .500 of our conference games next year. Is Phil Steele going to then select, "overnight", 7 to 10 more UL players he left off of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd all SBC teams from the prior year? Are they going to become "more talented" in the span of a year while the rest of the conference individual talent lowers?

This is about as interesting to me as stat gazing. I also don't really care if a bunch of fans that like to pace their excitement... for whatever reason... don't want to believe Hud is going to crank this football program up in his first year... even with the returning talent... I don't much care. I go by my gut feel all of the time... and I trust it. Hud will put a much improved overall football product on the field... beginning this coming year.

So's everyone else. The TE at Notre Dam has 59% of the vote.

Pewee and the Georgia TE both are next with 7.9%.
