The 13th-ranked Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns Softball team will take to the field for the first time in eight days as the squad travels down Highway 90 for a midweek meeting with in-state foe Nicholls State on Wednesday, April 6.
The doubleheader is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at Colonel Diamond on the Nicholls State University campus.
The twinbill will represent the Ragin' Cajuns (24-7) final competition before opening Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday, April 9 at home against New Mexico State (17-19). The Cajuns will have one more opportunity to fine-tune its game before hitting the stretch run to defend its four straight Sun Belt championships.
Revenge will be a factor as well for Louisiana-Lafayette. Nicholls State (13-24) is the only non-ranked team to hand the Ragin' Cajuns a loss this season - a 1-0 victory on Saturday, Feb. 19 on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth inning. The win allowed Nicholls to snap a 24-game losing streak to Louisiana-Lafayette and record its first win in the series since March 4, 1998.
The Cajuns and Colonels will be meeting for the third and fourth times this season. The two teams split in the 19th Annual Louisiana Classics at Ragin' Cajuns Softball Park with the Cajuns winning 8-6 on a Jill Robertson 10th-inning homerun before NSU sneaked away a 1-0 win the next day.
The Ragin' Cajuns are 6-0 in Thibodaux under co-head coaches Stefni and Michael Lotief having swept doubleheaders in each of the past three seasons (2002, 2003, 2004). The Cajuns have won 12 straight games at Colonel Diamond and haven't lost there since April 21, 1993 (L, 2-3).
Wednesday's games continue the Cajuns current stretch of 26 straight games vs. NCAA Midwest Region teams.
