I'm not necessarily saying we will play either one or both. I'm talking about being ahead of them to host a regional. Right now, their resumes place them as #2 seeds in a regional, our resume places us as a #3 seed. Could we wind up in either place? Yes. Could we wind up somewhere else? Yes. This week's rpi will give us a better idea of who is going where.
The cards are stacked against UL. We could go undefeated and our rpi would not be as high as a good major conference team (exagerating hopefully). UL has beaten LSU and Houston at their own places during regionals and super regionals but that does not matter. Reputation only matters if you play in a major conference. It is OK because the Cajuns will not be afraid to play at any place. I don't worry about hosting because the powers that be will not allow it under most circumstances. Just makes it better when we beat the so called better teams at there own place.
While it is always satisfying beating big name teams on the road, we ourselves are always a power but it would be even more satisfying beating both A and Ms, Baylor, Auburn or any of the other "big name" schools on the current softball radar near our ranking and in our region at our place. Every year we are contenders. I don't want to complain about UL being featured on ESPN softball broadcasts when we play postseason games, but I would love for the announcers to not sound so surprised that we were there and winning. Hosting would give us a little current validity (considering we hosted in 02' i think) beyond our record. I'm just hoping things fall in place once again.
BOP answered the bidding issue.
If it goes like it has in past years and all indications are that it will then the scenario plays like this.
1. Find U.S. map.
2. Find compass to draw radius circles.
3. Allocate regional host in a manner that will keep the plane flights to a minimum.
If you read the guidelines it is clear that this rules all other decision factors. Even seedings take a back seat. They will protect the number one seeds but after that you could be a 2-4 based on geography and NOT on your performance or how they think you ranked in the field of 64.
No doubt it will be an interesting setup for regional hosting.
Can you imagine Yvette's last game being a loss to the Cajuns on her home field? Little bit of irony there.
If I recall correctly, almost every year,Arizona and/or Arizona State are sent to the east coast to be the #1 seed in a regional.
Maybe LSU won't want to lose again at their home park in Yvette's last year.
Just because LSU "barely" beat McNeese on the road and a top 5 Tennessee swept them at home means UL would crush LSU?
I could say the same thing for UL. Losing to Southern? Losing a series in the SBC? I guess LSU would "crush" UL because of that also, right?
LSU swept number 1 Alabama, defeated Texas, and ended up 4th in the SEC. I think that's pretty good.
Seriously, I doubt either team will host. I thought LSU's RPI would have been high enough to get in the top 16, but it didn't happen. Maybe if they win the SEC tournament, but other than that, no.
UL almost has to have an "under 5 loss" season to host. Their RPI doesn't help them at all.
Who knows what will happen in post season. Either team "could" crush the other. Both teams are capable of beating top teams on any given day.
I have a feeling Houston, LSU, UL, and some other team will be in the same regional - probably with Houston hosting. That would be some interesting stories don't you think?
You are probably right, but Houston does have a RPI at 21, so they are very close to that "magical" 16.
After thinking about it, I see LSU going to either Baylor or Texas. UL could be going to a number of places - Alabama, Tennessee, Baylor, Texas, Georgia, Florida, Arizona schools, etc.
Something just tells me that they will put LSU and UL in the same regional.
