First of all let me say as you do I think Coach J. Kelley Hall should get a $37,616.00 raise, to put him at the Sunbelt average. Unlike you I think the program will generate the money, and yes Louisiana's coaching budget already has the money sitting waiting to be applied to a winner.
The Daily Advertiser 02-05-04 * Bustle gets two-year extension
Bustle currently makes $185,000 a year, with incentives built in, and a raise is being discussed.
The Daily Advertiser 03-13-04on the imperative raise for Evans:
* “Wins and losses are obviously part of it,” Schexnayder said. “We look at where we have been in conference competition. For example, women’s basketball has not done much before recently, so we would look at that much differently than (for) men’s basketball that’s had good success."
San Francisco Chronicle 04-21-04:
* Evans' current contract expires this year. He made $170,000 a year at Lafayette. The USF base salary is thought to be $200,000-plus. Evans, who was in San Francisco last week meeting with Hogan and other officials, wouldn't confirm the deal.
The Daily Advertiser 04-23-04:
* Schexnayder said that contract negotiations with Evans continued through Wednesday morning, when the seven-year Cajun mentor was presented with a contract package for four years at what he called a “serious addition” to the salary Evans was paid under a three-year contract that expired this year. Evans flew to San Francisco following that Wednesday meeting and accepted the Dons’ post.
Schexnayder said that the final offer would have made Evans the highest-paid employee in the UL Lafayette athletic department, and was for a four-year period when Evans was seeking only a three-year deal.
Since that time Nelson hired a replacement coach who did not have 132 wins, did not have four 20-win seasons (3 in a row), did not appear in 2 NCAAs and 2 NITs in the past 5 years. I do not need to know what coach Lee is making, there is no way Authement and Schexnayder paid Lee what they were paying Evans, much less the offer that would have paid Evans well over $185,000. Combining the raise that Evans turned down and the lower new salary and I'm thinking you have your $37,616.00 raise for Hall right there.
Since that time 1st time assistants have been hired in basketball. Are they making the same amount of money that a 9 year head coach material assistant was making? I don't know, but there may be a couple thousand coaching budget dollars right there.
Since that time a former graduate assistant has been promoted to head volleyball coach. Is she going to make the same amount of money that a 9 year head coach was making? I don't know there may be a couple of dollars right there.
Currently a coach is being replaced in soccer. Is the new coach going to make the same amount of money that a 6-time professional coach of the year and multiple championship coach was making? No way. Poggi was a local legend. There sits a couple thousand dollars right there.
I someone wants I can break down the historical quotes some more, otherwise I think it's saft to say the unused coaching budget dollars that were shown to exist 15 months ago, are still there and could only have increased since. In fact the new funds generated from the increase in Lady Cajun Basketball attendance from this past season should go into contrat offers. Speaking of attendance. . .
With coach Hall at the helm, the next year will see Louisiana average 500 in paid attendance per game. Fans will gladly pay $7 per ticket, combined that would/will generate $47,000 more coaching dollars than before coach Hall was hired. Back then 150 family adn friends was considered a good night. Not any more, in a few years Lady Cajun basketball will average 1000 per game, a $94,000 dollar increase over day one of the Hall regime. In the years after that the sky is the limit.
