Talks to retain Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball coach J. Kelley Hall have stretched into nearly three months since the 2004-05 Cajuns finished a 22-9 season in the championship game of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
Athletic Director Nelson Schexnayder, who left Wednesday for the NCAA Convention in Indiana, has discussed giving Hall a multi-year contract to continue his building of a program that had been among the worst in the college game.
"Kelley and I have spoken on a couple of occasions," Schexnayder said. "I haven't had a chance to present a formal proposal and get the University's feedback on it.
"They've been cordial conversations. I'd like to get something done that would recognize the success Kelley has had here, something he feels good about."
Hall said he wants to stay.
"I'd like to settle in, sign it, move on and win this thing (the Sun Belt title)," said Hall, whose second team was 13-15 and who tied the school record for wins with last season's 22-victory surge.
"It's frustrating. Right now, we're committed to staying, but if we can't get it done, I can't see us staying. I just want what's fair for me and my family."
"We do have certain limitations," Schexnayder said. "I know Kelley understands that."
Hall's base salary of $67,599 lags behind the rest of the Sun Belt Conference and is starting to fall behind other in-state schools for the same position.

I can't believe this still hasn't been done! I've had as much patience as anyone regarding Nelson's management/leadership skills; but if he screws this one up he needs to start packing his bags. Not "having a chance" to get a formal proposal to the University is total BS. That's his darn job!![]()
I realize there is a lot of other things going on right now; but this is as important as any. If we truely want Women's basketball to succeed, get this done before the current contract expires!![]()
I agree completely! If Schexnayder lets Hall slip away, I will be extremely saddened and disappointed. IMO, there's no excuse to letting Hall slip away. And money should not be a problem either. In the completely unreasonable excuse that the university can't afford, let's do some damn fundraising so we can. Whatever we need to do to keep Hall, let's do it!Originally Posted by shof

P.S. In reference to the current salary (less than $70K). If we can't even be around the league average ($104K), then we have no business talking about getting into a "better conference". Everything (slight exageration?) will cost more if we want to be part of a "CUSA type" conference. Granted it should generate slightly more revenue; but this is not acceptable.

As was stated on Stevie-P (Stinkin' Genius) show, Womens Basketball is the #3 College sport in Ameriaca, behind Football and Mens Basketball.Originally Posted by shof

He continued saying how much more money does Nelson give to a sport that does not draw. He must not have gone to the last several games for the UL womens basketball team. It was electric and PACKED!!!!!!!!!!!! Acadiana WILL support a WINNER PERIOD!!! The last two classed of J. Kelly Halls have been steller, and last years ranked in the top 25 in the country with the states #1 point gaurd and the #1 Jr College transfer, also a 6'5"(can run the floor)center, and more!!
This is how I see things! J. Kelly should be paid at the level of where he has gotten the team. Won the West, lost in the finals, that puts him in second. Pay him. The money is there and MORE is coming in. I for one WILL get Season tickets this coming year for the first time. I do have a boxseat(6) for baseball, 5(level 100)mens basketball, and 7(35 yard line)football and have spoken with a friend of mine that wants to each get 2 tickets for Cajun Softball this upcoming season!!
PAY J. KELLY HALL, DR. A AND NELSON, GET IT DONE(build it and they will come) PAY COACH HALL AND YOU WILL HAVE TO MOVE THE WOMEN INTO BLACKHAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![]()

I'm begining to think that NS is encuraging Hall to leave...How can you justify his salary in comparision to the rest of the coaches in the SunBelt??? This is crazy to me!Originally Posted by shof

Exactly! As stated, when you remove Hall's salary from the equation, the average goes up another $4K. This guys should be paid in the top half of SB coaches; not the toilet. Anything less than around $110K is an insult! I know football drives the ship; but to be considered an "all sports program" we need to step up in all phases instead of being cheap just because its not a "revenue profiting" sport. And I agree, if this program continues to improve EKL will not be big enough. Just not to Blackham!Originally Posted by RaginEsquire06
Finally. Has anyone ever heard a definitive reason why Poggi was not retained? I did see an article that stated "some parents of players" were not happy; but also saw where others were fine with him. What really happened, and have they found a new coach yet?
It is sad when we can't compete with the other schools in our conference. We will never reach our athletic goals without spending a few dollars to retain quality coaches.
