What would coach Bustle say (Part II)

After pondering recent things I have read, I am struck with this thought.

Pretend-per chance-that coach Rickey Bustle was asked to speak at Dr. Authement's next media gathering. In this hypothetical situation, the subject would be athletic department improvements. Coach Bustle would be asked to comment on what he personally thinks needs to be done in the area of improvements by the University.

This hypothetical news conference has no time limit.

What does coach Bustle want to happen in the area of..

Improvements in facilities.

Fund raising, and usage of such funds.

Volunteerism.

What does he have a right to expect from Dr. Authements "new commitment to athletics"

How can we prevent recruits from walking away from their visits thinking "this is bad"

Scratch the last one. How can we assure that recruits walk away from their visits thinking "this is GOOD"..

That is a very good question. Prior to being hired for this job it is reasonable to assume that Coach Bustle was given some type of promise about Dr. A's commitment to athletics.

Right now only those two know what was promised but it must have been to Bustle's liking since he is here. He should fully expect whatever he was promised when he took this job.

I think one thing we can look for if it is at all possible is an indoor practice facility. Remember early in the season when quite a few practices were forced inside? Coach mentioned this then.

LAFAYETTE - UL head coach Rickey Bustle has two wishes for his Ragin' Cajun football program.

One he wants more. The other, he wants less.

Other than recruiting, the two areas he said could play the biggest role in long-term success are facilities and scheduling.

"Obviously, the biggest thing we have to do right now is hit the road running and get players in here that can add to what we're doing," he said following his squad's 3-9 finish. "We're telling all the kids we can that when they make their decisions they need to base them on what this program's going to be, not where it's been."

That said, Bustle talked about future ideas to upgrade the Cajun facilities, and to do some adjusting on a schedule that was front-loaded this season and won't be any easier next year.

The Cajuns faced Texas A&M (6-6) and Minnesota (7-5) to open a slate that also included LSU (8-4) and Arkansas (9-3). The latter two finished tied for the Southeastern Conference's West Division title, Minnesota started out 7-1 before a late-season swoon and A&M notched a win over Big 12 South champion Oklahoma. All four are bowl-eligible.

Next year, the non-conference slate includes rematches with Minnesota and Houston as well as an opening game against South Carolina and contests against Oklahoma State, Southern Mississippi and Louisiana Tech. Four of those are on the road, with guarantees from those games a major source of income for the program.

"It's a very similar setup to what we had this past year," Bustle said. "I understand why we have to play these kind of games, but I'd sure like to not have to play as many of them."

UL athletic director Nelson Schexnayder is in charge of scheduling for the program.

"We've talked about the schedule a lot," Bustle said. "I'll have input and I'll give my opinion, but he'll have the final say."

I have an audio clip from the conference when Bustle was hired. He turned looked at Authement and said something to the effect you promised me I can do scheduling.

I wonder how many Cajun fans realize that Bustle wants an easier schedule.

Whether or not he gets it will depend on budget limitations.

I have heard a lot in the last few days (from those who have read Jerry Baldwins lawsuit) about what he claims the university did for Bustle that it didn't do for him.

Below is a piture of what Bustle did for Bustle, and Baldwin didn't do for Baldwin.

Baldwin can complain about grass not being mowed. But did he ever go pull weeds at his stadium?

Coach Bustle, Fredrick Stamps, Charles Tilman, and Eric Rekeita joined the group that parades the flag about before the football games. The three players were presented with mvp plaques for the wins. Coach Bustle was made aware that we expect a lot more plaques to be presented next year, and the years to come. Everybody had a great lunch. These functions are the things that a coach must attend like it or not.

I told coach that I hoped he would not be available next December as he would be setting up his practice and bowl schedules. He concurred hoping we could do it a little later after the teams final game of the year.

Wednesday 12.4.02 at the Madi Gras Ballroom. This was attended by those that donate to the Victory Flag, the student orginization that displays it prior to the games, and of course all the players and coaches that received recognition. It was not a publisized event. Costed the donors an additional ten bucks for lunch, the flag bearers and invited guest ate free.

When I see coach doing for himself it makes me want to help out.
