Thread: Tracking the Preaux Career of Orien Greene

  1. UL Basketball Rookie Greene starts to come on

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – It was seen as somewhat of a revelation when Celtics players began whispering over the weekend that rookie Orien Greene could be the starting point guard by the end of the season. But Doc Rivers moved his foot toward the accelerator on that issue last night.

Greene came off the bench behind Delonte West but played the majority of the minutes in a 118-116 overtime loss to the Nets. Dan Dickau was pried from the pine for just the last 2:15 of overtime after West fouled out.

``It's probably the way it's going to be for right now,'' Rivers said. ``Orien and Delonte have played so well.''

So West starts and Greene is the first sub?

``Right now – or it could be the other way around,'' Rivers said. ``That hasn't been decided.''

Moments later, Greene, who had 10 points and seven assists in 37:45, said he didn't mind coming off the bench.

``He's going to play whoever he feels is best for the situation,'' said the second-round draft pick. ``We're just going to go out there and keep working hard in practice. Whoever he wants to start is who he's going to start.''

    UL Basketball Orien Greene news

I looked on the Celtics website, I am happy to put this on the board.

Player Front Career Stats Splits Game Log Fantasy

    Fantasy News
News: Rookie Orien Greene has reportedly won the starting point guard job for the Celtics.
Impact: Dan Dickau is lacking on defense and Delonte West hasn't done enough in the preseason to earn the job. However, we doubt the Greene experiment as a starter will last too long, and West should eventually have the job. (Tue. Nov 1, 2005)

Just like they doubted he'd even make the developmental league squad. He may not set the world on fire, but he's the kind of guy that, once given a chance, runs with it and doesn't look back.

Is it time to retire his jersey yet?

    UL 1984, 1999 . . . . Re: Orien Greene news

Don't they have to wait a certain amount of time before they can do that? I think it should be, but is there a time limit before they can?

Did Tiras leave because Greene was leaving?

"Orien Greene was great tonight, by the way. Some of his passes drive me nuts, because young guys for the most part - they don't value a basketball as much as coaches do, I can tell you that. But I thought he made shots, I thought his defense was great. And I thought nine times out of ten he made great decisions. That was nice to see."

-Boston coach Doc Rivers after a 85-71 win over the Pacers in which Green played 17 minutes, scored 8 points, and had 2 assists.

  12. UL Basketball Orien Greene comes up Big for Celtics

He is listed on the Celtics roster as a 6-foot-4-inch guard, but Orien Greene wound up looming large in the final minute of last night's 109-106 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats.

Greene scored all 6 of his points in the fourth quarter to help the Celtics stave off an undersized but spirited Bobcat squad that took 100 shots (and made 40), forced 23 Boston turnovers (16 steals), and rallied from a 16-point deficit in the third quarter to tie it at the start of the fourth (81-81).

The rookie from Louisiana-Lafayette logged 9 minutes 39 seconds of action but found himself on the floor for the game's final 7:13 and seemingly made every second count.

''I'm basically waiting on my name to get called, my number to get called, and just go out there and help the team win," said Greene, who also had two rebounds and one assist to his point total.

Greene tied the game at 92 with 6:23 to go when he stroked a 19-foot jumper, then took a fearless run at the basket -- on a play where he was supposed to penetrate and kick it out to Paul Pierce on the perimeter -- to break a 102-102 tie with 57.5 seconds left, and provided the Celtics with an important buffer when he went to the foul line (courtesy of Primoz Brezec's third personal) and calmly sank both free throws to give the Celtics a 108-104 lead with 17.3 seconds to go.

''Orien was huge -- huge," said Celtics coach Doc Rivers. ''I mean, down the stretch. The layup was the biggest play, to me. Obviously, making the two free throws as well. You know, he just came in and he wasn't scared to play."
