Thread: Tracking the Preaux Career of Orien Greene

  1. UL Basketball Orien Greene finds another home

      Breakers net NBA player

The New Zealand Breakers have signed a former NBA player to replace injured import Wayne Turner.

Towering 1.93m point guard Orien Greene, 25, has played 128 NBA games for the Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers and the Sacramento Kings, but became a free agent on November 15.

Breakers general manager Richard Clarke said the club worried that the player market would be bare given that the key European and American leagues were into their new seasons.

"We knew we were facing a tough task to replace a guy like Wayne Turner, and were a little nervous about who would be available in the market," Clarke said.

"If we had been looking even a week earlier Orien wouldn't have been available.

"But we got lucky with the timing and our US-based scout alerted us to Orien's availability and was able to convince his agent to take a look at the opportunity.

"As a result we will have a pretty good player arriving here on Friday."

After a stellar high-school career, Greene attended the University of Florida, his hometown college. After becoming disenchanted with being played out of position, he sat out a season and transferred to the University of Louisiana.

He became renowned for his aggressive play, winning the defensive player of the year award for the Sun Belt Conference in his senior season.

  2. UL Basketball Greene takes Breakers throne

    Audio Interview

New Breakers point guard Orien Greene has been in the country less than a week but already has his eyes on an NBL playoff run.

The 25-year-old arrived in New Zealand on Friday morning and trained with his team-mates for the first time on Saturday.

Speaking to the media following his first training session, Greene said his only goal is to help the Breakers get to their first ever grand final.

"We never made it to the playoffs so that's my goal, to try to help us get wins and get us to the championship," he said.

After 128 games in the NBA with Boston, Indiana and Sacramento, Greene is impressed by what his new club has to offer.

Greene is a defensive expert and while his career shooting percentage in the NBA was below 50 percent, the disruption he can cause opposition shooters makes him a big threat.

The Florida native is a true team player and said he has aspirations to make his team-mates look better rather than taking the spotlight for himself, an aspect of his game he's proud of.

"You know just getting to the lane, getting other guys shots and on the defensive end just causing havoc. All around just a ball player, making everybody better."

Greene's bold move to New Zealand is the first time he has been outside of the US but after being released by the Sacramento Kings three weeks into the NBA season, he needed somewhere to go.

"I was with the Sacramento Kings throughout training camp and they waived me. It's a weird time over there to get waived, it's the beginning of the season.

"I just needed somewhere to play and also I talked to coach Andrej and he seemed like a good guy who will give me an opportunity."

  4. Default Orien Greene and Breakers make playoffs

The Breakers are playoff-bound in the Australian NBL.

They beat the South Dragons 104-93 in Melbourne last night to consolidate their position in the top eight.

They are in sixth but have exactly the same 15-win,12-loss record as the fourth and fifth-placed Wildcats and Crocodiles.

Kirk Penney again led the scoring for the Breakers with 28 points but found great support from imports Derrick Alston and Orien Greene, who scored 17 and 13 points respectively.

  5. UL Basketball Orien Greene Leaves Australia for Israel

Premier League / Basketball / Jerusalem's fresh face helps topple Galil Elyon

Hapoel Jerusalem defeated Galil Elyon 97-89 after Dan Shamir's club increased the pressure in the fourth quarter, Guy Pniny scored 25 points and Orien Greene made a nice debut.

After trailing by double digits for much of the game, Hapoel came back. It then pulled away, thanks to fresh blood off the bench, to record its second away win of the season.

Greene, Jerusalem's new point guard, who arrived from Australia, contributed a lot of team leadership, sank important shots and proved that he also knows how to distribute the ball. He allowed Dror Hagag time to rest and also led Jerusalem in the final period. Greene finished with 12 points and five assists in 26 minutes of playing time.

  6. UL Basketball Pniny powers Hapoel J'lem over stubborn Ramat Gan

A short fourth-quarter burst against Ironi Ramat Gan gave Hapoel Jerusalem enough of a cushion to hold on and seal a 90-85 victory in their Premier League game last night at Malkha Arena. . . .

Orien Greene sealed the victory for his new club by sinking two free throws of his own.

UL Basketball Re: Tracking the Preaux Career of Orien Greene

After living just outside of Amsterdam for 5 years in my early 20's (and playing very minor ball) all I can say is Orien should have a great time. He should look up Lee Massey, a basketball icon in Holland who I believe played for the Den Helder Crackerjacks. Great memories...
