WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) - Celtics rookie Orien Greene was arrested and charged with driving his sport utility vehicle at more than 90 mph on a city street in this Boston suburb.

The point guard was arraigned Monday and practiced Tuesday. He was expected to play Wednesday night against the Knicks in New York.

"He will be disciplined by the team, significantly," Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck said.

Greene's SUV was spotted early Monday by an officer who said Green slowed and accelerated several times, "which the officer believed was evasive movements," Detective Sgt. Tim King said. The police report did not indicate tests for alcohol or other substances, King said.

Charges of failing to stop for a police officer and operating recklessly were dismissed upon payment of $100 fines for each. Charges including speeding and marked lane violation, for which Greene was deemed responsible, were placed on file with the court, and the case closed.

"I know Orien to be a wonderful kid," said Keith Kreiter, Greene's representative. "And even though he made a mistake here, I know this isn't going to be a pattern."

This is only news because he is a professional athelete. We all make mistakes. I (like alot of people) have driven over 90 mph. The only difference is that I have not been caught going that fast.

Orien Greene practiced with the Celtics yesterday and will be available tonight in Chicago, his suspension for a motor vehicle arrest having indeed been held to one game. “He’s back,” Doc Rivers said. “We had another talk. It went well, but actions obviously speak louder than words.” Greene’s actions - driving through Waltham at more than 90 miles per hour early Monday morning - cost him $4,430.68 in salary and fines from the court. “Again,” Rivers said, “it wasn’t the speeding. It was more the professionalism of the whole thing.” Asked if Greene panicked, Rivers dismissed the question, saying, “You shouldn’t be panicking at 3:30 in the morning. You should be sleeping.” Speaking publicly for the first time since the incident after yesterday’s workout, the rookie was contrite. “First of all, I just want to apologize to my teammates, the organization, the coaching staff,” he said. “I just made a terrible mistake and I learned from it. I’m ready to move on.” As for the most obvious question of why he didn’t pull over immediately for police (failure to stop was one of the charges), Greene said, “I think that was embellished a little bit. I mean, I didn’t actually see him at first and, of course, as soon as I saw him I pulled over. He said he actually was following me for a mile and a half, which I didn’t see him or hear him. Looks like Orien had a new career high with 14pts tonight. Now that the Celtics don't have anything to play for Pierce, West, and Szczerbiak are all sittin and the young guys are getting some shots. I think Orien played well enough this year to get a shot again next year.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Orien and the Celtics in the offseason. Problem for Orien is that the Celtics are pretty stacked at guard. Delonte West, Tony Allen, and Dan Dickau would probably all be listed on the depth chart above him at point guard next year. Dickau might be more of a two guard, but Orien is probably no better than the third point guard, at least in Doc Rivers' eyes.

I think the Celtics are going to be retooling in the offseason with as disappointing a year as they had. I think Orien is currently capable of being a solid backup point guard in the NBA right now. I was surprised when Orien was getting more minutes than Dickau early in the year before Dan got hurt. I got to see Dickau play alot last year when he was with the Hornets and I thought he was deserving of a starting job somewhere. He runs the halfcourt offense very well and proved he can be a scorer if need be while in New Orleans. That being said Orien is a much better defender and can run the fast break just as well, plus he has an advantage with his size compared to most other PGs. Dickau also is contracted for $2.25 million and if they chose to resign Orien they could probably get him a little cheaper. Either way I think Orien gets a shot somewhere.
