Actually, the idea that defense is not played in the NBA is one of the biggest misconceptions in sports. The NBA problem right now is how physical the game has become and how much scoring has decreased. That is why TV ratings are down. If more teams played like the Phoenix Suns, the sport would regain it's popularity. People who can shoot but have physical shortcomings don't even get a look in the NBA. Anyone who is a defensive liability has no shot to make a team as opponents will target him for isolation by the offense.

CM, The level of defense played during the first 3/4ths plus of the season is nowhere near the level played at the end of the season and during the playoffs. Todays players may represent the more physical athlete, but the schemes don't call for much defense to be played.

Perhaps the scoring would increase if many of the league's average shooters would be forced to make a pass and work a play instead of shooting so many bad shots from 3.

Assuming Orien makes the Kings roster, fans in Louisiana should get to see him in the season opener. They play the Hornets in New Orleans and I believe Cox Sports will carry the game.

I was at a bar on Friday night and noticed the Kings were on ESPN. Did anyone watch this or note any highlights and how OG performed?

Voisin's View: It's not official, but Greene gets point

Orien Greene, right, will start at the point guard position in place of the injured Mike Bibby on Wednesday night in New Orleans. Greene shoots free throws with teammate Ron Artest at practice on Monday. Jose Luis Villegas / jvillegas@sacbee.com

Reggie Theus is refusing to officially name his starting point guard for Wednesday night's season opener at New Orleans, but the identity of the mystery man was obvious while watching practice.
Orien Greene will start in Mike Bibby's usual spot alongside Kevin Martin. The move makes sense because the 6-foot-4 Greene is a better defender and ballhandler than Quincy Douby, and he matches up better against the cat-quick Chris Paul, Tony Parker and Devin Harris, the starting lead guards for the Kings' first three opponents in New Orleans, San Antonio and Dallas, respectively.

  8. UL Basketball Kings: Greene faces questions

NEW ORLEANS – What if Orien Greene doesn't foul out?

What if his Louisiana-Lafayette squad – the David to the Goliath that was Louisville in the 2005 NCAA Tournament – followed Greene's lead until the end of a white-knuckle first-round matchup, and the Cardinals' Final Four run was stopped before it even started?

What if Francisco García and Reggie Theus – the Kings' player and head coach who were then the Louisville star player and an assistant, respectively – didn't reap the benefits of so much fame and glory, and Greene was the one on his way to prominence?

It was not to be, though. Greene fouled out with 7:18 left in the 68-62 loss to Louisville, having played only 18 minutes in what was called the key of the game.

"That was devastating to us," Ragin' Cajuns coach Robert Lee said afterward.

    And to Greene.

  9. UL Basketball Enjoy the Undercarriage of a Bus, Orien

I'm not one of these yahoos who will sit around and yell about how "NBA players don't respond to criticism! You've got to coddle them!" There's no generalization to be made about motivating people -- grown men, impressionable youths, little girls, prison inmates; if we knew a fool-proof cure for motivation, there'd be no such thing as FreeCell, blogs, or coffee breaks. We'd all be under the effects of some government gassing which forced us into a subconscience persistent productive state.

But Reggie Theus' print attack on Orien Greene seems entirely misplaced.

Coach Reggie Theus said he provided free-agent guard Orien Greene an opportunity to run the team, and it wasn't embraced.

"The real side of that was I gave him the ball, and I didn't think he embraced it," Theus said of Green, who started the first two games. "I didn't see that burning desire. I know if it was me, I'd have been slobbering at the mouth. I'd have been like a rabid dog, and I didn't see that."

I hesitate to call two six-minute stints to open games an opportunity. Even if you do, look at the first half of the only winnable game on the trip: The Kings outscored New Orleans 21-16 in nine first-half minutes with Greene was in the game, and were outscored 41-21 in 15 first-half minutes with Greene on the bench. ...

  10. UL Basketball Re: Orien Greene

The Sacramento Kings waived guard Orien Greene on Thursday after just seven games with the club. Greene, a third-year pro, started two early games as Sacramento's point guard in place of injured Mike Bibby. But Greene lost the job early on, and newcomer Beno Udrih had 17 points and five assists in the Kings' loss to Minnesota on Wednesday night.
