Thread: Tracking the Preaux Career of Orien Greene

UL Basketball Re: Orien Greene dunking on espn highliights this morning

I just read this on the pacers website " Lost amid the din of yet another off-court moment has been an otherwise upbeat training camp for the Pacers, despite Thursday's news Orien Greene would miss three weeks with a broken finger." That blows, I hope he recovers quickly and becomes their starting point guard.. If that happens I will defiantly have to buy his jersey..

  2. UL Basketball Broken finger puts Greene on sideline

Ordinarily, an injury to a player fighting for a roster spot would be regarded as a severe setback.

Orien Greene, however, has made such a positive early impression with the Indiana Pacers that CEO Donnie Walsh encouraged him to take care of the fractured pinkie finger on his left hand rather than risk further damage.

"We've seen enough," Walsh said he told Greene. "The right thing to do here is get your finger fixed."

What Walsh and coach Rick Carlisle saw in Wednesday's preseason victory over New Jersey was Greene leading a fourth-quarter blitz that overcame a five-point deficit and resulted in a 103-89 victory.

Greene -- claimed off waivers from Boston's roster in July -- had two points, two rebounds, five assists and two steals in the final period, when the Pacers outscored the Nets 30-11.

Team officials couldn't detect when he suffered the injury. He did not attend practice Thursday, and is expected to be out about three weeks. The Pacers open the regular season Nov. 1.

The Pacers have four other point guards in camp. Greene, however, appears secure.

  3. UL Basketball Orien Greene gets some minutes

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle threw yet another wrinkle in the rotation Saturday when he brought in little-used point guard Orien Greene during the first quarter.

Greene, the team's fourth-quarter point guard, checked in before Sarunas Jasikevicius and Darrell Armstrong.

"Orien has been working hard in practice and he's a little different version of Darrell Armstrong," Carlisle said. "He can get after the ball defensively. He's got great size."

Greene, who played six minutes, hadn't logged substantial minutes since playing 18 against Cleveland on Dec. 9.

"We need to find out what he can do, and we believe he can help us on this kind of basis," Carlisle said. "I've talked to Darrell about it. Darrell has done a great job of helping our young point guards develop."

No Joke? A hundred dollars and you don't even get bubble gum in the packs anymore.

  9. UL Basketball 2007-08 Greene faces critical NBA season

Orien Greene faces an important third season in the NBA.

First, the Gainesville native must prove he can stay healthy after a broken finger sidelined him for 41 games last season.

Second, Greene must impress new coach Jim O'Brien after Rick Carlisle was fired this past offseason.

Third, Greene must show he's a building block in the future plans of the Indiana Pacers while playing in the final season of a three-year $2.2 million contract.

"Hopefully I can get the opportunity to show what I can do," Greene said. "Last year, I kinda took a back seat because of the injury. If I'm out there playing, I feel like I can do good things."

Greene, 25, has already learned the NBA is a league of change. Last offseason, Greene switched teams when the Pacers claimed him off waivers after the Boston Celtics released him.

The 6-foot-4, 193-pound point guard was eager to make an impression with his new team last season. But in Indiana's NBA opener at the New Jersey Nets, Greene jammed the pinkie finger on the left hand while trying to grab a loose ball.

X-Rays revealed a break. Greene, a lefty, sat out nearly half the season before returning in February.

  10. UL Basketball Pacers waive Orien Greene

The Indiana Pacers announced Friday they waived Orien Greene. The 6-4 guard played in 41 games for the Pacers last season, averaging 1.5 points. The Pacers picked up Greene on waivers from Boston, July 9, 2006.

Greene's career began in 2005 in Boston, where he averaged 3.2 points per game with the Celtics. A tough player, Greene will probably find another job in the league, as a backup deep on a bench.
