Bander, I was in band in high school (Acadiana in the late 70s, when we totally ruled)... my friend who buys football season tickets with me, who was also in the AHS band with me, has a daughter in the Lafayette High Band (they won Showcase). Acadiana used to win this when it was the Contest of Champions... we won it every year, so it disbanded (pardon the pun). The out of state bands felt like it was rigged... curiously, we won every other contest, even nationally-based, that we ever entered.Originally Posted by Cajunbander
I am very supportive of the UL band. I was too stacked with engineering and work at UL to be in the UL band, way back then. I understand that your halftime shows are your band director's decision. I think this year's group is really good, and play the old school rock tunes as best they can be played. From being in marching band, it is difficult to arrange or purchase arrangements that keep a marching band from sounding "dinky". I would like to see your band director investigate a little more, and focus on what makes a band sound strong and talented on the field... latin-based arrangements. The general public doesn't generally understand the difference, other than "hey, that sounded great".
Thanks for the hard work you guys put in, and next year I hope to come into Lafayette and hear the Showcase competition. Also, keep "RESPECT" alive and well... we played it at Acadiana back in my days there.
Geaux Cajuns!!!
Well, I love you know. HAHA! I was in Acadiana's band too, I graduated in '05. I always saw the plaques and awards on the walls in the band room and wished that we could do that. We never really did. It's kinda depressing, since my class left (we had a huge graduating class in band) the band at AHS has gone down. When we had nearly 200 people in it my senior year, there's only like 115 in it this year. What I did like, and it meant that we didn't win a whole lot of competitions (although we did normally rank in the top three or top five) is that we played music that the crowd could get into. Our whole goal was to entertain the crowd, and we did that by playing stuff that people could sing along to. A 70's show, and Elton John show, a Michael Jackson show to name a few. We weren't the best, but damn, our fans loved us.Originally Posted by Just1More
Oh, and there's no way Respect is ever going to go by the wayside. Its like the unofficial second fight song.
Ya know when we are about to kickoff, and everyone is yelling "OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" and the ball is kicked and then we do an even louder "OHHH"? Get what I'm sayin? Well. What about this. When we're about to kickoff, why not we all go "UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU" with our arms in the shape of a U. And when we DO kickoff, we yell "L" with our arms in the shape of an L. Kinda like a YMCA thing. I think this would be really cool.
Seein rutgers last night reminds me of some things I've seen recently that I'd love to see added. Utep has the miners, and use the pick-axe as kind of a symbol to show the "lets get to work" mentality. Rutgers does the "Choppin Wood" thing as their symbol of "lets get to work". I would love to see UL adopt something with the roughneck oil workers in the area. Maybe a pipe to represent our work ethic on the field, layen pipe play to play, dont quit. I'm open to suggestions.Originally Posted by Corndog308

I like using the oil field industry mixed in our identity. I have never understood why it wasn't mixed in a little more into the UL identity. Being that it would potentially attract more oil business involvement/advertisement and that couldn't hurt. I have to believe that some at UL and Lafayette don't necessarily embrace the industry... otherwise, I just can't figure it out... I am biased, however, my entire life has always been connected to this industry.Originally Posted by TuffGuy84
If done properly, the parallels to football could bring some interesting ideas... we may have to work carefully with the "laying pipe" idea... if you know what I mean. There are a lot of good analogies to work with, but the whole idea of the oil industry theme will have to be embraced first. I am all for it.
Ok, yall been asking about the cannon at football games. Well, when I was in college, graduated 2006, the Kappa Alpha order (frat) had the cannon. I believe its in the front of their house and has alot to do with their frat traditions. They started bringing it to the games and would use it after touchdowns. I would really like to see it back! You would have to go through university officals/athletic/ fire marshal, etc... to get it back. I don't know the reason why they stopped.
There are alot of traditions cooking in the student section. One band song we say "GO...U...L, Rajun Cajuns Go U L...woohoo" and they play it all the time at baseball games. I do like what the cajun chicken did at the basketball game when he pointed to one side U then the other L, and then red, white..etc..Interaction like that at a football game would be awesome. It sometimes feels like the student section is seperated from the rest of the stadium.
Just a note : There is some talk about building suites above the student section, so people could rent for games (byob as long as you don't sell it)
In Ragin Cajun Pride
P.S. Its not too late to buy your baseball season tickets!!!
As good as the walk is, and I have seen a couple on my visits to UL from Maryland, we leave out one important group from this. THE STUDENTS. And we wonder why they do not attend. Unfortunately the lay of the land and rules prohibits this.
It would be nice to see tailgating on the student side, probable best started by the Greeks, maybe even getting their alumni involved. Once that is going then maybe a new walking route coming from the student side aroung the front of the athletic offices, down to the Tigue and then circle thru the tailgaters back to the dressing room.
Several of the Greek organizations have tailgating spots very close to the route of the Cajun Walk. They do not stop their partying and leave their spots for the Cajun Walk or to go to the game. The alienation of the student body and many alums by the failure of previous admins (jury is still out on this admin) to give them a program they can be proud of is to blame. Unfortunately if the current admin does not give change that soon the apathy will carry over as these current students become alumni.
Anyone tell the date and who usl played in 1963 homecoming game? Thank in advance
