Some need to be tossed out in my opinion. We have a tradition of being a bad football team. We are doing our best to get rid of. Why not add some new traditions to go with a winning football team? I love this! I can respond with the cult coming down on me!Originally Posted by California Cajun

Don't hate the band, hate the director. Its not the band that decides what to play in the stands. Our band council (band students) do decide what we play for the halftime show though. I have to say, I've seen a lot of college bands, and they play a lot of the same things we play in the stands. If you've ever been to a basketball game, we barely play anything we play in the stands at the football games. Its harder, and is much better, but we have a whole lot less people. You underestimate how hard it is to be in the marching band. It's not easy to get 240 people to do anything together, much less play and march. No, we're not the best marching band in college, but we're not the worst, and we do our best. We want to have fun at the games too.
To what some people said about playing the same halftime show over and over. You can just up and learn a new show. Its not that easy. We have learned two different songs to add to the shows for the rest of the season. Next year, we are going to try and do two different, contrasting shows.
Basically, you want better shows, support the band more. I invite all of you to go to the Showcase of Marching Bands next year and watch us preform. The home side is usually full and all cheering for the band. Look at how much better we do and how much more enthusiam we put into the show, just because we have that energy to feed off of.
To you who complained about the old school rock show this year. It's better than broadway show tunes like we did last year.
And we've played Respect at every game this season.
I like the old school rock show,Originally Posted by Cajunbander
When is showcase, they never have it in the vermilion or anything. My girlfriend was in band in high school and loves that stuff. I just checked out this thread and I dont know what people are talken about, I love the bands energy. For the amount of money in that program, we get ALOT of return.Originally Posted by Cajunbander

you can't just make up a tradition. These things have to come by being loyal fans and going to all the games. Winning will help alot. Sometimes i just wish everyone would stop trying to force everything on our program and the university and just let it come naturally. If we win and people continue to support something will become our tradition. Thats what makes it a tradition, not going out and planning what the fans or the players should do. Thats why hardly any of our "traditons" have stuck b/c people try to force it and make it out tradition instead of just letting it happen. just my opinion
You just missed it this year, it was last weekend. Its usually in November/October sometime though.Originally Posted by TuffGuy84
Bander, I was in band in high school (Acadiana in the late 70s, when we totally ruled)... my friend who buys football season tickets with me, who was also in the AHS band with me, has a daughter in the Lafayette High Band (they won Showcase). Acadiana used to win this when it was the Contest of Champions... we won it every year, so it disbanded (pardon the pun). The out of state bands felt like it was rigged... curiously, we won every other contest, even nationally-based, that we ever entered.Originally Posted by Cajunbander
I am very supportive of the UL band. I was too stacked with engineering and work at UL to be in the UL band, way back then. I understand that your halftime shows are your band director's decision. I think this year's group is really good, and play the old school rock tunes as best they can be played. From being in marching band, it is difficult to arrange or purchase arrangements that keep a marching band from sounding "dinky". I would like to see your band director investigate a little more, and focus on what makes a band sound strong and talented on the field... latin-based arrangements. The general public doesn't generally understand the difference, other than "hey, that sounded great".
Thanks for the hard work you guys put in, and next year I hope to come into Lafayette and hear the Showcase competition. Also, keep "RESPECT" alive and well... we played it at Acadiana back in my days there.
Geaux Cajuns!!!
Well, I love you know. HAHA! I was in Acadiana's band too, I graduated in '05. I always saw the plaques and awards on the walls in the band room and wished that we could do that. We never really did. It's kinda depressing, since my class left (we had a huge graduating class in band) the band at AHS has gone down. When we had nearly 200 people in it my senior year, there's only like 115 in it this year. What I did like, and it meant that we didn't win a whole lot of competitions (although we did normally rank in the top three or top five) is that we played music that the crowd could get into. Our whole goal was to entertain the crowd, and we did that by playing stuff that people could sing along to. A 70's show, and Elton John show, a Michael Jackson show to name a few. We weren't the best, but damn, our fans loved us.Originally Posted by Just1More
Oh, and there's no way Respect is ever going to go by the wayside. Its like the unofficial second fight song.
Ya know when we are about to kickoff, and everyone is yelling "OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" and the ball is kicked and then we do an even louder "OHHH"? Get what I'm sayin? Well. What about this. When we're about to kickoff, why not we all go "UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU" with our arms in the shape of a U. And when we DO kickoff, we yell "L" with our arms in the shape of an L. Kinda like a YMCA thing. I think this would be really cool.
