Housing has floor plans on their webpage at housing.louisiana.edu.

Haven't heard anything official as yet from Parking & Transit. What I've heard from people around campus is that residents will get parking in the new structure but, as of end of last semester, they had not decided on what to do with any excess capacity. I'm guessing reserved parking as it would be difficult to manage mixing the two types of parking (and that's how they managed the surface lots where the structure was built). Part of the first floor will be used by the credit union.

Also, will the parking garage be for the students that live in the dorms or first come first serve type basis.. It's just amazing to see this amazing progress. When I went to school there, I would spend 1/2 hr looking for a parking space and end up parking in girard park and being late for class..lol.. Glad to see the progress and helmut thanks for all of the info and pics.!

It looks like there are some students that have moved into new Baker as I saw several people going into the building this evening with pillows ans other College student stuff. The windows had blinds and I could see televisions operating in some of the rooms. The lobby was furnished.

Landscaping is continuing and half of the band practice field is ready for sod. The Parking garage is being cleaned up and parking stripes are being painted. All but the top floor lights are operating tonight (Wednesday August 3). The sidewalk between the Garage and Hamilton Hall is being formed up and will be ready for concrete soon.

As for as how many room are in New Baker I don't know but I would think that it would be close to the number of rooms in Old Baker Old Huger, Bonin and the few rooms they were using in Evangeline because they are now closed. If I remember correctly when all this is finished the total number of rooms available will be increased by about 35% (I think).

My guess was the asbestos was only an issue when they began to tear down the buildings, which would have made it airborne. It was probably insulating pipes, electrical, or HVAC, which would have become airborne when you started ripping it out.

This is what I understand happened with Fletcher Hall. To make a long story short. The award of the design of Fletcher Hall was an open competition amongst Architectural firms in an attempt to get more competition. The winning design was selected as the building you see today. They used many different types of construction techniques and processes in an attempt to illustrate to the students what can be done in a building. It is in essence, a laboratory for the Architecture students. Unfortunately, during the course of construction, the budget got busted. The central courtyard was to have a sky light and be an indoor space. Because of the cost over run, they left the skylight out of the project. Soooo all the doors and stairs in the central courtyard that were supposed to be inside are now outside. Anybody want to guess how long an interior door will last in an exterior environment? The result is, the building is a maintenance nightmare in addition to not blending in with the remaining buildings on campus. The building is a great example for the students as to how NOT to do a project. You might also note that there is no plaque on the building to Identify the architect, contractor or any of the responsible parties involved in the design and construction of the building. In short, the building is just wrong on many levels. If anybody else has anything to add or correct please do so because all of what I posted is from memory.
