    Probably very few games last night, a Monday. We're at "59" as of today (April 12th)...but only a hair out of 54th.

    We need to win tonight...and need AT LEAST 2 out of 3 this weekend.

    Go Cajuns!

    I'm concerned about this weekend. FIU could always hit, but it looks like they have some pitching to go with it this year. Would love to take two of the three Red.

    .0083 away from #54 is not a hair, Red. But it is closer at this time of the season than late in the season. That is, this type of margin becomes much more significant later in the season.

    Note that we are closer to #74 than #54 (.0076 away from #74).

    Also, I believe we have two midweek games (five in total this week).

    Tuesday -> McNeese State
    Wednesday -> @Northwestern State

    Splitting these will hurt our RPI.

    Two things, Mr. Golfin...1) Cajun hairs are larger than other hairs, so I think I was alright there... and 2) I'm a half-full kind of guy, so I was only looking ABOVE us... and not looking BELOW us. :-)

    I recommend not looking down. That first step off of the bank building is a doozy.

    Hypothetically, what would a 5-0 week do for us?

    aw, c'mon, hawk. it's no big deal for their fans. remember what they said after we beat them...it's only baseball.

    All other things being equal (meaning ... the Cajuns OWP and OOWP does not change ... which it will), the Cajuns' Adjusted RPI would move from .5480 to .5623 with a 5-0 week. Using the present Adjusted RPIs for all teams (which will change), this would put the Cajuns at #49.

    Unfortunately, games against teams like Northwestern State (#187) and Florida International (#40) work against the Cajuns relative to what those teams' rankings would normally yield. IOW ... as an example, the Cajuns would be better off playing #291 Savannah State than #187 Northwestern State! Yes ... a win over #291 Savannah State would be better than a win over #187 Northwestern State (by .0010) ... and a loss against #291 Savannah State would be better than a loss against #187 Northwestern State (assume road games, as we are not accounting for the possibilities of RPI penalties). There are only 300 teams playing Division I baseball. This illustrates the fragility of the RPI formula and how it is not suited for actual use.

    In fact, beating #40 Florida International is only .0032 better than beating #291 Savannah State.

    As another example, the Cajuns would be better off playing #153 New Mexico State than #40 Florida International. A win over New Mexico State is worth .0012 more than a win over Florida International ... and a loss to New Mexico State is worth .0012 more than a loss to Florida International.

    These are not isolated corner cases. I can come up with countless other examples until the cows come home.

    Yes, folks, that is what happens when a ridiculous formula is used. The flaw is in how the formula is weighted (heavy bias towards OWP). And this is why I have said that is better to schedule teams that have decent records against weak schedules than schedule good teams with mediocre records against strong schedules.

    Another mid week game loss for the kitties. It doesn't mean anything. I hear they are actually talking about softball on tigerdroppings. I thought that was meaningless to them?
