    1.
a person who is competing for the same object or goal as another, or who tries to equal or outdo another; competitor.
    2.
a person or thing that is in a position to dispute another's preeminence or superiority. _
Key word in both those definitions is "Person" we are talking about a school. if these definitions applied to school rivalries, we would be rivals with everyone we play..

That's why I used them as an example. The people at Middle tennessee don't like Tennessee, but would you consider them rivals in sports?!?! I know I don't.

Am I the only one with access to google.com?

    http://www.wordiq.com/definition/School_rivalry

    School rivalry - Definition
Pairs of schools, especially when they are close to each other either geographically or in their areas of specialization, establish a school rivalry with each other over the years. This rivalry can extend to both academics and athletics, the latter being typically more well-known to the general public.

Academics aside. I dont see us competing with them on a consistent enough basis athletically. LSU and UL fans don't like each other. Florida and LSU are rivals.

The article refers to them as our "in-state rival".

Would you consider them our "in-state rival"?

I honestly am not sure. Here's why: In football I say no we are not in state rivals. When I look at just about all the other sports I notice we have teams that are capable of beating theirs and most of our fans have a certain hatred for LSU. But LSU fans dont feel the same. Like the article said, they(the fans) hate us but not for the same reasons. They see us as annoying and people who dont know their place (which is total BS, but trust me, this is how most feel). They never really look at us as much of a threat and see us as irrelevant in competitions. So is it an in state rivalry if one fan base doesn't seem to really see the other team as a threat? Again just to be clear I am talking about athletics. Academics and politics is a whole other story.

We must be rivals. Two LSU guys own Walk On's and they have UL and LSU on the same wall. Remember; "A House United"..........

We can play with them and maybe beat them in b-ball(I think that we ended the season ranked higher----In softball we are actually a better program----In baseball we kicked their butt at their place (we do not have a better program but yes we have won enough to have them respect us)----We aren't there in WBB and won't be with our coach----T&F they are way ahead------It is not only LSU but all the other schools holding us back-----If they only let us rise to a level we want to achieve and LEAVE US ALONE!!!!

Any suggestion that LSU is our rival in anything misses the larger point. We may play them occasionally in some sports, but in all honesty, I never consider any games between schools where one usually dominates the other as a rivalry. A rivalry isn't automatic, nor an entity that can be manufactured like the Sunbelt has attempted to create between UL and ULM. True rivalries take decades to form and evolve amongst peer programs and institutions.

While ULM competes against us pretty well at significant levels athletically TODAY, I just do not consider them our peer. Never will. That role belongs to LA Tech. They may not be as big, nor in as an attractive market, but I respect them for their ambition. THESE are the folks I want to beat athletically and academically on a regular basis. And if we happen to beat Goliath here and there in the process, I'll take it.

But, I do not see LSU as a rival in anything, other than competing for state funding..

Goliath, however, isn't a lightweight politically speaking. The state legislator is where so many of their victories have taken place.

Got to learn to beat the ______ out of them there, and play as dirty....

Define rival? When two teams play each other with high intensity and your opponent wins enough games that it is not total domination. I'm sorry, but anyone denies that there is not a rivalry with LSU in softball and baseball, doesn't understand the definition. ULM is a conference rival, LSU is a state rival. We have beaten softball the last two regionals in Baton Rouge. We have beaten LSU baseball in a regional game. Those games mean't something then, RPI and rankings. It is also fair to say the UL softball program is become better then LSU's over the past two years and is the best in the state. You don't just measure facilities and budget, but results. We are rivals in both sports, despite the denial by some in purple & gold, and a few in red as well.

Wasn't going to go there, but you said it. The opposition will now say that softball is an "irrelevant" sport and the baseball game was a fluke, but, oh well...

Leads me to a larger point that LSU pretty much had designs on softball domination, but pretty much, well, failed...

    Funny.

That's pretty funny, talk about a rivalry. I hear the Texas A&M, Texas rivalry is beyond healthy. I saw that game as Louisiana vs. Texas (States).
