An umpire from the middle of the field called a strike, bunting attempt, on (I believe)Dallas Morris. An umpire from behind or near second base is not supposed to call strikes. It was at one of the many critical times during the game.
An umpire can call a strike if the call if appealed down to him. But in a situation where the umpire is behind the pitcher's mound, it is very difficult to tell whether the batter made the attempt at bunting. In that type of situation, the home plate umpire will rarely appeal to the guy behind the mound. The other umpire did not have the view because Morris was blocking his view. 99% of the time the call won't be appealed.Originally posted by CajunKahouna
