HONOLULU, Hawaii - Tony Robichaux said, even before his University of Louisiana baseball team began play in the First Hawaii Rainbow Classic, that the Ragin' Cajuns needed to learn to win in several different ways.

His team has apparently taken him at his word.

The Cajuns, 16 hours after posting its most impressive offensive performance of the season against the best team they've faced this year, turned to pitching and defense on Wednesday and improved to 2-0 in Rainbow tourney play.

The pitching of Kevin Ardoin and Micah Cockrell and flawless defensive play made four early runs stand up as the Cajuns posted a 4-1 victory over South Florida to remain unbeaten on the season.

Tuesday night, UL (12-0) lit up 15th-ranked Wichita State to the tune of 22 hits on the way to a 19-3 embarrassment of the Shockers. On Wednesday, the Cajuns got only two hits after the first four innings ... but didn't need them.

Ardoin scattered five hits in six and two-thirds innings and Cockrell retired all seven batters he faced as the Cajuns remained perfect in the prestigious meet entering today's 2:30 p.m. game against Sacramento State (6-6-1).

"We came off a big emotional win last night," said Robichaux, "and we as coaches talked about how we might have to grind this one out. That's sort of what you expect after one like yesterday. But they did a good job."

Ardoin (3-0) fanned seven but was uncharacteristically wild, walking three and hitting two, but worked out of several minor jams after giving up one run and stranding the bases full in the third inning.

"He'd been going on five or six days rest all year, and we moved him up to only four days," Robichaux said. "He didn't have his best stuff, but he did what he does and that's give us a chance to win. He kept them right there and never cracked. We did a good job defensively behind him with no errors, and that's important."
