FYI .. Northwestern beat St. John's 6-5 today.
Halfway through its first game in its own tournament Friday night, the University of Louisiana's baseball team had two big needs.
The Ragin' Cajuns had to have someone step up with a big hit to provide some breathing room, and they needed a pitcher to slow down Southern's pesky Jaguars.
Phillip Hawke provided the first, Thad Montgomery turned in the second, and the Cajuns remained unbeaten with an 11-7 victory over the Jaguars to wrap up the first day of the UL Invitational Tournament.
The Cajuns (4-0) play their second game of the tournament at 2 p.m. today against St. John's, which saw a 5-2 lead evaporate in the late innings in a 6-5 loss to Northwestern State in Friday's tournament opener.
The hosts were in danger of having the same thing happen to them on Friday, after Southern cut a 6-2 deficit in half with back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning by Gerard Gause and Kellen Clark off Cajun reliever Chris Johns.
"We had talked before the game about breaking a team's back with a big home run," said Cajun coach Tony Robichaux. "Something like that really takes the wind out of a team's sails."
Hawke took that to heart, sending a towering grand-slam home run over the pine trees in right field in the bottom of the fifth. The squad's first shot of the season (two homers in Wednesday's suspended game at Sam Houston State don't count until the game is completed in May) provided a 10-4 lead.
