LACOMBE, La. (AP) - The Chandeleur Islands and the rest of the
Breton National Wildlife Refuge are closing to the public for
nesting season and continued oil spill cleanup.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the refuge will close
Wednesday and remain closed until further notice. It also includes
Freemason Island and the North and New Harbor islands.
Brown pelicans, terns and skimmers are among colonial species
that nest on the islands, which have been significantly eroded by
recent storms. Any disTurbinece of nesting birds is prohibited.
The agency says crews will continue cleanup from last year's BP
oil spill.
People can still fish nearby for species including speckled
trout, red drum, flounder, cobia, mackerel, white trout, shark,
black drum and tarpon.
