Thread: chance of walking on to UL Softball?

Default chance of walking on to UL Softball?

I know a young girl graduating high school this year that played some high school softball but didn't play her Junior year and is not playing this year, her senior year. She is planning on attending UL this fall and was talking about getting back in shape and trying to walk on to the softball team.

I know this will be very difficult and highly unlikley with the caliper of players already on the team. Are there any statistics out there for walk on's actually making college teams or even ever getting the chance to?

Like I said I know this is a long shot for her, but I need a way to present it to her so that she still has the motivation to get back in shape.

    Thanks

One of my friends, Courtney Trahan, walked onto the UL team a few years ago and was used strictly as a base runner. It was a pretty rare situation, at least the fact that she made the team. I remember specifically her having to work extremely hard to prove herself, just like all the girls do. If I'm not mistaken the coaches welcome the opportunity and would always love a hard worker, but it will take just that. I'd tell her to contact the coaches and go from there. She better be ready!

My daughter's sister in law (i.e. her husband's sister) is Ashley Kirk who is a top pitcher for North Texas.. She will probably match up against Ashley B today... Her younger sister is better than Ashley.. She is a freshman and is the starting pitcher for a large 5A high school in Texas. I have been emailing the Lotiefs... When they came here for the wedding of my daughter and her brother, I showed her around campus... she has interest from Oklahoma, TAM and other Big 12 schools already but would love to become a Lady Cajun.... A very mature and impressive young lady.... I hope they sign her..............

Good stuff. When you first said "she is better than Ashley" I first thought you meant Brignac, but I'm assuming now you meant Kirk. But hey who knows she might just turn out that good. Sign her up

I think the Lotiefs would welcome her with open arms, as long as she does all the right things as far as work extremely hard, take care of things in the classroom and represent the softball program with dignity.

Frankly, it also depends on what she hopes to accomplish by walking on. If she goes in with the "Amanda Hill attitude" that she'd rather be a small part of something big than a big part of something small, she'll fit right in. Everybody plays a role on the team, and every role is important. If she has these grand illusions that she's going to supplant someone in the lineup, she will be setting herself up for failure. Not saying she can't and that it's never happened, but on such an elite level of softball, walk-ons that break into starting lineups are rare. If she can handle just being a small part of something big, like I said, she'll be fine.

I assume you mean better than her sister Ashley and not Ashley Brignac?

Definitely looks like a softball family. Hopefully she keeps improving and decides to join the Cajuns. She seems to have the tools needed to be a top notch college pitcher.

lol.. yes guys I was referring to her sister Ashley... by the family's accounts at this age she is better than her sister.....

As for today I would suggest we go into the game today against Ashley KIRK prepared..... she set the NT record for strikeouts in one game last week... dont remember the opponent but if its Ash against Ash, runs will be at a premium....

The Cajuns usually have 5-6 girls try to walk on every year. Once they start to practicing, almost all drop out. The work load these players have is unbelievable. Only those really passionate about softball stick it out. It's a grind to go to practice and sacrifice yourself on every play. Go to practice one day and see what I mean. Those girls work HARD! They play with pain! That ball ain't soft! But, if you want it bad enough, you will find a way. Good Luck!
