Thread: One of the Oldest references to UL being the University of Louisiana

  1. UL 1984, 1999 . . . . One of the Oldest references to UL being the University of Louisiana

Since the name "University of Louisiana" became available in the late 1800's the oldest provable reference I have found is now Feb. 1974.

I had heard the University of Louisiana movement started in the late 60's and early 70's.

University of Louisiana in use as far back as Feb. 1974

Just an old example of Cajuns trying to represent something they are not.

February 1974 was my first exposure to the University of Louisiana name. It was my second semester in college.

There was a student referendum on campus, asking us to vote on whether we would like the name changed to University of Louisiana. The measure was overwhelmingly defeated.

I asked to speak to Dr. Authement and he graciously let me in for a few minutes. When I expressed disappointment in the outcome of the referendum he smiled at me and said, "We'll try again." That gave me the impression that this was a dynamic university.

10 years later we achieved it and it was taken away from us by LSU illegally and unconstitutionally. 15 years after that we had to accept the bitter compromise, again instigated by LSU, that at least two universities had to seek the name change and accept the city tag.

My involvement with the name has spanned 2/3 or my life. And the job won't be done until the city tag is removed in popular references to this university.

I remember the article announcing Augie Tammariello as the new head football coach. This coincided with our debut in Division I and the official nickname change from Bulldogs to Ragin' Cajuns. I didn't remember the University of Louisiana reference.

As much as I hate to point fingers the blame lies in the lackadaisical attitude of the Sports Information Department.
They bend to the pressure from the National Media. If they would take a strong stand with the networks, especially ESPN the name University of Louisiana would become the norm.
This is not a new problem. When we were Southwestern Louisiana University the name of preference by true fans was USL. The Sports Information Office even then bowed to pressure from the national media...NO GUTS -NO GLORY.
No matter what our RAGIN CAJUNS are called by the National media they are THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA TO THOSE OF US THAT REALLY MATTER AND CARE

I think our first game as a Div. I-A program was Rice in Houston. Augi's first game was vs the Greenwave in NO. He called me and the wife Sunday--Living in Ashville,NC --A State Farm Agent that still loves the Cajuns. Sees Jake every now and than!

As a teen that is actually one of my oldest recollections, Cajun fans used to love the 3 letter acronym and I recall them often getting upset with the national media for calling us Southwestern instead of the much preferred USL.

I was thinking of that the other day when it crossed my mind that ironically foes of the University today -out of spite- use USL more today than they ever did back then.

And I wouldn't count on it this season.

After the skull reaming in November, ole Weatherbie told Bustle at the coach's handshake after the game, "Well, Congrats Coach, we gave you that one."

Bustle replied, "There wasn't any giving today. We came and took it from you."

I'm sure Rickey will remember that conversation in a couple of months.
