Thread: UL Keeps Rogers For Uncertain Future

I was one of the ones, J, that would have bet money we would make a change THIS year.

Once it was mentioned that we would not, I came to the same basic conclusions that you did. I have confidence in Scott and T-Joe that the right hire will be made in 12 months.

She happens to know Rodgers well as they coached together at one point at Mississippi St., and she truly was pulling for him personally to do well.

I am not happy that we kept Rodgers for another year, but the way I look at it, we kept Bustle and Lee at least a year longer than we had thought and wanted, and look what the UL administration was able to produce when the time was right. In both situations I think money had a lot to do with it and my gut feeling is this is the same. So if we need another year to build some cash to go out and hire the best coach with a competitive salary that is multi-year than lets wait another year. What sucks the most, is there is no doubt that waiting another year will set back recruiting for a year, but if there is a sport that you can change the face of and have a quick turnaround it is basketball.

Now that the 'we don't care' stance has been taken . . .

A much larger cash pool (for the future) could have been built going the internal interim route.

    Status quo makes zero sense.

Maybe its just me but I find it hard to be critical of an administration that has made universally sound decisions over the past 12 months in regards to coaching changes and facility improvements. I won't claim to be thrilled that Rogers is staying but I have full confidence in those in charge that the decisions they make are the right ones and have the right motivations behind them. It's easy to be critical or lump those decisions into the "status quo" column but I would have expected more faith by some. BTW, what is status quo with this decision from an administration who seems to have a track record of being proactive. I'm not talking about the previous boys and the issues some had with keeping Bustle and Lee for longer than we liked, I'm talking about Farmer and T-Joe who have been very emphatic on making changes and making them swiftly?

She would be a great interim coach, and who knows . . . _

And how do you know she would be a great interim coach? Do you have some insight into that conclusion? Instead of being able to make a proper search and evaluation on future pay, I'd rather not go that route. This does not guarantee success or any type of immediate solution to the problem.

    Wait a minute zephyr.

This admin learned from the last admin that you can get away with throwing a couple seasons away, provided you make a good hire later.

To me it's a lot like rooting for your fave pro team to lose so you can get a good draft choice. Not good.

Turbine, if you feel that the administration has bastardized the program and sacrificed the ability to win while setting up longer term goals to secure good coaches with proper funds, then you are free to criticize. I think that we all agree that on the surface, the hires made in basketball and football have been nothing but positive so far and If you feel that has hurt the program, please say that. You'd likely be in the minority. The economics of the collegiate landscape is not pretty nor fair for a team witht he budget of UL and the resource limitations. That doesn't mean that the administration in place doesn't have bigger plans for success in the future. A football coach and basketball coaching change is a multiyear decision and often has a lasting effect on a program either good or bad. Had we made the changes when we perhaps were not ready to, we would likely not have been in the position to make the proper choices and those choices could have put us back years. The same can be said for this hire. Your suggestion of an interim route doesn't make much sense and I don't feel it can do anything but hurt us in the longrun if it doesn't work.

That is their stance but it doesn't hold water because if they were making an attempt at setting up longer term goals with proper funds they could add a quick $70G by going interim.

What is it you are expecting to work? It is a money saving move nothing more.

While you have a "known, unknown" in interim (thank you Donald Rumsfeld) you have a "known, known" in Rogers.

You know, Gay Nix went from 1-26 one year to 12-16 the next, but that doesn't mean keeping her was good move. Rogers did improve his record a total of 2 games this year and there are actually people running around the athletic department praising his improvement, however. However that does not leave room for anyone to claim an interim could possible hurt the program in the long run.

Why do the female basketball players deserve any less than the men when it comes to quality coaching. Its sad that we accept this. Turbine I agree if not hire a new coach for supposed financial or AD to busy reasons let an asst step up or interim. Rogers has proven he cannot produce so move on for the women who are committed to us they deserve no less than a commitment from the AD to get them a quality coach.

An "interim" hire for a year would totally destroy recruiting. Interim should only be used on a very short term basis to finish a season or something similar.
