Austin Robichaux, rhp, Notre Dame HS, Crowley, La.

Robichaux is the latest to emerge in what's lining up to be a very good year for Louisiana prep pitchers. Robichaux didn't pitch at any of the major showcases this summer, so he was a little under the radar, nationally, but put himself on the map with his showing at a recent workout.

"It's better than it was in Jupiter," a National League area scout said. "He was 90-93, sitting 91-92 and he's got that hard curveball, so it's interesting."

At 6-foot-5 and 180 pounds, Robichaux has a long and lean frame with physical projection remaining. He also has the advantage of having grown up around the game, because his father, Tony, is the all-time winningest coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, where Austin is committed.

I realize he's Tony's son but, do you think we'll keep him if MLB throws crazy $ at him. Don't ask me "what’s crazy money" that’s going to be a family decision. I know he would love to play for his dad just like Justin did. Ten to twelve years ago Joey Fontenot and Gilbert Meche signed for 800-900K going in the first or second round out of Acadiana High school. That was over 10 years ago. Austin has the same type of talent. I guess I want to see him in a Cajun uniform for my own selfish reasons, but how much $ do you pass up ?

They are nice problems to have. Not sure if you can put a price on loading your hometown team on your back, with family in the dugout celebrating a HUGE conference, regional or Omaha win. How do you possibly turn that down?....blink, sniff, blink.

If he's good, builds a resume, stays healthy and plays to his ability, then MLB will be there for him on the other side of a college career. I think a lot of top picks prefer paying their dues in college. The lifestyle is better, anyway. Nobody is cooking shrimp and catfish for you after a game in Quad Cities.

The road from rookie ball to the big leagues is a long and hard 5 year battle for the lucky few who make it out of high school and starting in high A out of college isn't much easier. When they start throwing half a million or more at you out of high school I believe it starts getting tough. Can make playing for the Lansing Lug Nuts for 3 years instead of your local college something to look at, but I do agree it may take a little more money than the average high school senior to not play for the Cajuns. IMO it has to be life changing money for the high school prospect.

I agree the college experience is great both on and off the field, and being a Ragin Cajun and playing in front of these fans would have to be an experience of a lifetime. I would love to see Austin in a Cajun uniform. When is deadline for deciding if you are going to sign a professional contract (if your drafted) August 15 ?

That's correct. Personally the only kids that I think should be signing out of high school are the ones that get offered life changing money and the freaks. Some of these kids could be hurting their potential MLB career by playing college ball because they could be in the big leagues at 19 or 20. Jason Heyward and Zack Grienke are a couple that come to mind that made it up rather quickly recently that if they went to college may have not come up until they were 22-23. You could argue that Tim Lincecum is one of those players that should have been in the big leagues at 21 instead of 23 and if he had not played college and gone out of high school he may have been. But those players are few and far between.
