What I am about to say, is something that I have felt we should do with track for years. We are limited in scholarship due to NCAA limits. I would like to see UL offer full scholarships and field a smaller more competitive track team. By offering full scholarships we would save on travel costs, bring in higher quality athletes, enable coaches to have more hands on coaching and focusing on just a few athletes.

If you have full scholarship athletes, you have a good shot at landing kids who are nationally competitive.

Recruiting is easy when you have full rides, you say. We have 18 women's FULL rides and still scored a whopping 16 points besides Anderson's. SO, that pig won't fly.

And who will sign-on to a small, piece-mealed program?

I am sure these assitant coaches will give "what if" excuses to protect their hind quarters, but the bottom line is, they are obviously recruiting the wrong people --- those who are either problem children and are suspended, those who can't stay eligible or those who maxed out in HS and can't become better because they are simply not collegiate athletes.

Translation: Obviously, there's no one here who knows how to recognize or recruit collegiate runners and then motivate them once they arrive. The proof is in the pudding.

Count em, only 7 of 34 mens and womens events were contested by Cajuns at a collegiate level. These other schools have the same retraints we do. And most don't have a TOPS-like program.

We'll wait and see what Scott Farmer does with this. It's his baby now.

Until then, it a SAD twentieth verse.

I am willing to bet that we have maybe 3 full scholarship athletes in track period. Track can split scholarships and they often do. If you are not familiar with the ins and outs of track and how scholarships are allocated then you really have no place degrading there performance.

How do meek little schools like LSU and Texas A&M and Arkansas do it? They have the EXACT same constraints. They each have about 110 athletes with their 30.8 scholarships.

The sign in front of Cajun Track says that we have 33 conference championships.... and all were done with the exact same contraints as are present today. And SOME never heard of TOPS.

BTW, you sent YOUR check lately? There are number of UL Foundation accounts to contribute to for track.

No, I haven't sent a check lately, but I did spend 4 years on that track sweating my ass off, under Lancon. I am also responsible for equipment donations, and have worked numerous track meets as an official. We won with field events and hurdlers. LSU and A&M both have had Pat Henry as a HC.

Henry normally recruits two types of athletes to LSU/TAMU, the ones who can compete immediately on the NCAA level and they get full scholarships. Then there are the athletes who can compete at the conference level. They are normally asked to walkon, but they do so because they can be part of a NCAA championship team or a BIG 12/SEC championship team.

If you have 5 full scholarship athletes that can score a combined 50 points at the NCAA championships then you will more than likely win the National Championship.

Lancon, won by placing 5-6 guys in each of the following events: javelin, shot put, high jump, decathlon, long jump, triple jump, hurdles and relays. He did that when Louisiana High School track was strong, it has not been strong in over a decade.

And I give every once in awhile to the United Way but that doesn't make me the expert on how to run their affairs. Sorry to hear that you lost your ass in a million dollar play-pen and that times are so hard that you've given back all you can.

You obviously don't know what you think you know for if you did you'd know how many partial scholarships at those schools delivered multiple national champions. The same holds true at Arkansas and Florida...and EVERYWHERE.

As for the events yon mention, except for what Badon recruited from Blinn, Lancon, with a few excpetions, was sub-par with events that had the toughest competition....i,e. on the track.

But they were olympic caliber compared to whats there today.

Pound, you know about as much about track as I do about astrophysics, which ain't much. No one will argue about the level of success of the current team. It is disappointing, though showing improvement.
But C4L is correct. Arkansas did it with distance and jumps. LSU and aTm do it with sprints and jumps. Stanford does it with distance.Nobody consistently dominates every event group.Even at the conference level.

VOB what do you think needs to happen to get back to winning conference championships? Any word on the coaching search?

Active Duty Army, deployed to Iraq in 04-06 now I am at Fort Rucker, AL so I am sorry if my priorities are on a little larger scope than just track.

There are rumors, but no definite word. There is a search going on, I can assure you of that. To win conference championships consistently we have to do the same things Lancon and Cole did: get back to dominating strength and technique events, essentially the throws, jumps and hurdles. All these events are pretty strong locally, but we have to quit losing throwers to Northwestern and SLU. If we hire who I think we will we will never lose another jumper to anyone, not even SEC schools.
As far as competing Nationally, C4L is right. Use 5 or 6 full scholarships on studs in our coach's area of expertise... and fill in with kids you can get for quarter scholarships, tops and pell grants. Takes lots of help from admissions//financial aid, but it can be done.
