Erath's Fourroux, others mull final offers; Chery adds late commitment.

The University of Louisiana will go into today's first day of the national football signing period with 24 of what the Ragin' Cajun coaches consider "solid" commitments.

And they still have a chance at bumping that number to 25, with one of the area's premier players deciding between the Cajuns and McNeese's Cowboys.

Erath quarterback Derrick Fourroux had issued a verbal commitment to McNeese coach Tommy Tate and the Cowboys in January, but that commitment wavered when former Cowboy - and former Cajun - assistant coach Gerald Broussard accepted a position on the staff at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas.

"I'm still mulling it all over," Fourroux said Tuesday night. "It's pretty tough ... I don't really know what I'm going to do right now. But I'm pretty sure I'll make a decision tomorrow."

The Cajuns got to 24 commitments Tuesday with a verbal pledge from standout running back Jason Chery of Spanish River Community High in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Fourroux, the quarterback on the Class 3A All-State team this year who helped lead the Bobcats to an 8-4 record, was contacted late by the Cajun staff.

"I've talked to a few people at UL," Fourroux said. "They didn't recruit me hard early, but they've talked to me a lot over the past couple of weeks. I'm just going to go with whichever one feels right."

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Fourroux had interest from most state schools after completing 113 passes for 1,893 yards and 18 scores with only seven interceptions as a senior. He was a two-way threat, rushing for 935 yards and an average of almost seven yards per carry along with 17 scores.

Fourroux was the Most Valuable Offensive Player on the All-District 6-3A team and was also picked on the All-Vermilion parish and Best of the Teche squads. He was a first-team Daily Advertiser All-Acadiana pick as an athlete. In his career, he threw for 3,983 yards and 35 scores while rushing for 1,771 yards and 23 touchdowns.
