Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns captured a share of the Sun Belt Conference West Division championship on Saturday evening by defeating La.-Monroe by a final score of 61-46.
Louisiana (14-14, 11-5) has now won 11 straight games, the second longest active winning streak in the nation. In the process, the Cajuns won 10 straight Sun Belt Conference games, which sets a new school record for consecutive SBC victories.
After La.-Monroe (7-23, 2-14) scored the first five points of the second half, the Cajuns countered with 10 straight to build a 41-25 advantage. Baskets by La'Ryan Gary surrounded three straight tough inside buckets from J.J. Thomas.
The Cajuns had it in cruise control the rest of the half.
Another tough inside basket by Thomas saw the Cajuns lead hit 20 points, 58-38, with 4:23 left in the game.
No Cajuns player committed more than one turnover and the Cajuns tied a season low with just seven as a team. The other time the Cajuns had just seven miscues was January 22 at home vs. La.-Monroe.
UL won the rebounding battle, 40-29, and held the Warhawks to 35.8 percent shooting.
A trio of Cajuns finished in double figures, led by 13 points from Thomas. Thomas grabbed 10 boards to mark his sixth double-double of the season. Josh Brown scored 12 points to go with seven rebounds and Gary added 11 points.
Six different Cajuns each hit a three-pointer in the first half to help the Cajuns grab an 11-point lead after 20 minutes.
Four straight three-point baskets early helped the Cajuns take a 16-11 lead. A coast-to-coast lay-up by Thomas and a long jumper from Randell Daigle pushed the Cajuns lead to 20-11 with 8:44 left in the first half.
The UL lead hit 11 points before La.-Monroe made a run. The Warhawks scored five unanswered points to trim the Cajuns lead to 24-18 with 2:38 remaining in the opening half.
Daigle and Brown each added to the three-point party to quickly extend the Cajuns lead to 30-18 with 1:43 showing on the clock.
The Cajuns share the SBC West with Arkansas State and due to a secondary tie-breaker, the Cajuns will be the West No. 2 seed in the upcoming SBC Tournament. UL earns a first round bye and will play on Sunday, March 6 at 6:45pm.
