LOUISIANA La. – Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns tennis team was victorious over in-state opponent Northwestern 6-1 here at Cajun Courts Saturday.
“We’re really happy with the way we performed,” head coach Lisa Jackson said. “It’s a big to win our first home match.”
The Ragin' Cajuns began the cold, overcast day by sweeping the doubles point.
The team of Thais Bortoletto and Celine VanWeydeveld had little trouble with the Demons’ Vanden Bergh and Marcia Alcantara, winning 8-2. The teams of Tammy Day and Chanell Meijer, and Susan Linden and Kimmie Lyles followed suit, winning 8-6 and 8-4, respectively.
A confident group then took five of the six singles points to seal the victory. Day battled through three sets to defeat Northwestern State’s Anneline Zerwick 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
VanWeydeveld and Meijer needed only two sets to defeat their opponents 7-6 (6), 7-5, and 6-4, 6-3, respectively.
Bortoletto lost only three games to the Demons’ Alexandra Nieto, winning 6-3, 6-0. Linden defeated Camila Prado 6-4, 6-3, and Kimmie Lyles was the Cajuns’ lone blemish, falling 6-2, 3-6, 2-6, to Alcantara.
The win pushes the Cajuns record to 1-1, and gives Jackson her eighth win of her young career.
“We’ve still got a lot of work to do, but it’s a positive start,” Jackson said.
The women will head to Hammond, La., to face Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday, Feb. 1.
