Thread: General Lee has 2nd best start in UL History

  1. UL Basketball Comparing First Year Head Coaching Jobs at Louisiana

Through 18 games, new University of Louisiana head coach Robert Lee is off to an 11-7 start.

Former head coach Jessie Evans was 8-10 through 18 games in his first season (1997-98) while Marty Fletcher had a 7-11 record through his first 18 outings (1986-87).

Lee’s start is the best for a first-year head coach at
Louisiana since Bobby Paschal started with the exact same 11-7 record during the 1978-79 season. Paschal lost in his 19th game as Cajuns coach, falling 92-73 against Lamar on Feb. 3, 1979. Paschal’s first squad went on to finish that season 16-11.

Former head coach Beryl Shipley holds the best record for a first-year coach through 18 games at 12-6. Shipley was 13-6 after 19 games and went on to finish his first season 16-11.

    Ditto ... long term

For this year only; If UL can somehow go 6-3 to finish the regular season, "The General" will be in class by himself.

Beryl Shipley finished his first season 16-11

Louisiana coaches record 19 games into 1st season

  18. If Lee can somehow muster the troops to finish the regular season 5-3, "The General" will be in class by himself.

Of the UL coaches who coached at least 25 games in their 1st year. Robert Lee ranks #1 in wins.

    WINS through 25 games
  21. Robert Lee 17
  22. Bobby Paschal 16
  23. Beryl Shipley 15
  24. Jessie Evans 13
  25. Marty Fletcher 10
  26. Jim Hatfield 7
  27. With one more win this year, head coach Robert Lee will tie Jessie Evans for the most total 1st year wins.

With the latest win over UNT coach Lee avoided what happened to Bobby Paschal who got to 16 wins at the same clip but proceeded to lose his last 3 games of the year.

Currently Robert Lee has 17 wins and in 1997-98 Jessie Evans had 18 wins. The difference is Evans coached 31 games that year and Robert Lee currently has (so far) coached only 25.

I'm taking it that Coach Evans' total includes postseason play.

I can't wait for The General to surpass all other coaches' win totals for the first year BEFORE postseason starts.

Here's hoping that, including the next two, Coach can add 11 more wins to his total before we hang 'em up for the season (that's an NCAA title for those who don't like doing the math )

By the time this season is over that chart won't be big enough.
