I was joking. See Bowl debacle from a couple years ago. No, technically NIT can take a zero win team if they want. They put in this auto bid to legitimize their money grab (errrrrrrrr post-season tournament).
The NIT is basically a fancy lower-tier bowl system. That's all. With that said, I won't turn down an invite unless I earn a spot in the big dance.
Still wondering what in the world BM was talking about though...
1. The automatic bid to the NIT goes to the team in the league with the best conference record. FAU locked that up last night. FAU goes to the NIT if they do not win the SBC tournament.
2. The poster who talked about the CIT and CBI is correct. Good job, Slappy
3. I don't know what Coach was referring to, but it is probably one of the tournaments above. It is NOT the NIT.
So there is no guaranteed conference rep for the NIT?

Oh no, not that again. Say it ain't so. Somebody get WW on the line.

Exactly. Middle Tennessee played in the CollegeInsider.com tournament last season, Troy the previous season. FAU won the league's automatic NIT berth by being Sun Belt regular-season champs. The Owls will go to the NCAAs if they win the Sun Belt tourney, and no other Sun Belt team is guaranteed a postseason berth.

Both the CBI and CollegeInsider.com tournaments pick 16 teams. The CIT tournament requires teams to have at least a .500 record. The CBI has no such requirement.
According to a story in the Greeley Tribune, Northern Colorado had to pay a $31,5000 hosting fee to the CIT last season. A big crowd would help offset that fee. The Cajuns are drawing well, so that would be an option.
Another story from the Indiana State beat said that it's up to $60,000 to host a CBI game.
