MOBILE, Ala. - For the third straight season, Louisiana's Lady Cajuns basketball team experienced heartache at the Mitchell Center.
South Alabama's Kimyatta Viverette hit a layup with 3.3 seconds left to provide the game-winner here Saturday as the Jaguars survived in a 57-56 decision that kept the hosts perfect in Sun Belt Conference play.
The Cajuns (12-4, 2-1) rallied back from a big deficit to take a 54-50 lead with 2:23 left, but for the third straight season USA (9-6, 3-0) came back to take a close victory and knock UL out of the league's unbeaten ranks.
USA posted a 10-1 run midway through the second half to build a 10-point 45-35 lead with 9:07 to play, but the Cajuns stormed back with a 19-5 run. Two baskets by Ashley Blanche and baskets by Onna Charles and Tiffany Washington preceded a string of 10 straight points by returning league Player of the Year Anna Petrakova.
The last of those points gave the Cajuns that 54-50 advantage, but the visitors didn't score in the next two minutes. Two turnovers and two fouls enabled the Jaguars to get three points at the foul line before Bernette Tolston's two free throws put the Cajuns up 56-53 with 22.7 seconds left.
