Complete list of 2005 verbal commitments

Ragin Cajuns land commitment from STM quarterback John Hundley

LOUISIANA La. - After all of the recruiting wars, the endless phone calls and the constant questions, it came down to one simple fact for John Hundley.

"I just wanted to play here," said the highly-recruited St. Thomas More quarterback. "I like Lafayette, and I decided that's where I wanted to play."

Hundley, one of the South's top quarterback prospects and Louisiana's number one pro-style quarterback in most scouting services, gave University of Louisiana head coach Rickey Bustle a verbal commitment Monday.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Hundley is the Ragin' Cajuns' 15th verbal pledge for the 2005 recruiting class, but is easily the most high-profile commitment and single-handedly brought notoriety to the class with a month remaining before national signing day.

"It really wasn't that difficult a decision," said Hundley. "I like the coaching staff there a lot, I've gotten real close to coach Christophel (Cajun offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Rob Christophel), and it's easy for my family to come and see me play."

Hundley is ranked No. 1 in Louisiana and No. 28 nationally on the Rivals.com recruiting service listings of "pro-style" quarterbacks. The only other state quarterback listed among Rivals.com's national top 60 signalcallers is East St. John standout and Texas commitment Ryan Perrilloux, whom the service ranks No. 1 among "dual-threat" quarterbacks.

But St. Thomas More coach Jim Hightower said Hundley's running ability doesn't get the credit it deserves.

"He's obviously got the size, the great arm and the throwing touch," said Hightower. "But he's got nimbleness and awareness in the pocket, and he's got escapability that might not be apparent on first viewing. He's a very capable runner who moves around well, and he's really a big, strong guy."

Hundley completed 142-of-249 passes for 1,845 yards and 24 touchdowns with only seven interceptions as a senior. He also rushed for 512 yards on 97 carries and scored five rushing touchdowns for the Cougars.

By the time Hundley would be in a postion to start, the O-Line will be veteran laden.

Still, I think the staff can use the signing of such a highly touted Pro style quarterback to entice offensive linemen to come to UL.

True, a mobile quarterback can cover up a lot of O-Line mistakes. But linemen want to know that if they do their job they have a QB who can do his, without them wondering where the QB is at all times.

Then again if the O-Line can't perform its sure is nice to have a QB like Jerry Babb & Michael Desormeaux on board.

The siging of Hundley is Huge

  3. Default STM's Hundley commits to UL

LOUISIANA La. - The decisions for St. Thomas More quarterback John Hundley to stay home and Carencro offensive lineman Dwight Alexander to leave were essentially no-brainers.

Hundley, a 6-foot-3, 208-pound prospect, becomes another in a long line of STM quarterbacks to join the University of Louisiana's football program after committing to the Ragin' Cajuns.

Current junior UL quarterback Jerry Babb and Matt Lane, who completed his eligibility last season, are both graduates of Lafayette-based St. Thomas More. Throw in the fact Hundley's father, Doug, finished his career at then-USL in 1977 under coach Augie Tammariello as a standout linebacker.

"I have a lot of family around here,'' said Hundley, a first-team Class 4A All-State selection. "I thought it would be nice for them to able to watch me play."

Hundley, who will make his official visit to UL-Lafayette next weekend, was one of the driving forces in St. Thomas More's run to the Class 4A state semifinals.

Wife just got back home and when I told her about John Hundley verbally committing, she said, "I used to baby-sit him years ago"! She went to school with Johns parents (sibbling- brothers and sisters)! Very nice, good people!

    UL 1984, 1999 . . . .

I've seen that site before it is biased for LSU. Let them believe what they want he's coming here.

It'll be interesting to see if drops from a 4.5 star to a lower level now that he didn't commit to an SEC school.

    UL 1984, 1999 . . . .

On Dandy Don's website he talks about players in the state of Louisiana and ranks them, I saw that after one player that LSU was hot on committed to UL he dropped his rank. So it's happened before I'm sure it will happen again.
