Final Stats
The University of Denver women's basketball team dropped its first Sun Belt Conference game of the season 69-54 at Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday at the Cajundome. Denver falls to 2-11, 0-1 on the season while UL-Lafayette improves to 11-3, 1-0.
Lafayette extended its lead to 18 points with eight minutes to play (58-40) in the second half as Sonora Edwards scored six straight points in the spurt. The Pioneers put together a 9-0 run late in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the Rajun Cajun lead. Playing in front of a hometown crowd, Venice Adams (Luling,La.) scored nine points in the second half and finished the game with 14 tallies. Freshman Cassondra Bratton (Arvada, Colo.) scored nine points and added eight rebounds for the Pioneers.
"Unfortunately, we lost this game in five possessions in the first half," Head Coach Pam Tanner said. "We had about a three minute span when we allowed a 9-2 run and that was what lost it for us. We did a good job on (Anna) Petrakova and (Bernette) Tolston, but the other players stepped up and that's a mark of a good team."
Tiffany Washington and Onna Charles each scored 20 points to lead the Rajun Cajuns. 2004 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year was held to just six points, and second-leading scorer Bernette Tolston scored just three.
In the first half, Denver fought back from a 21-9 deficit to come within five points with three minutes to play in the period (30-25) using a 14-3 run. Bratton capped the run with a three point bucket at 3:05. Lafayette finished the half with a 7-2 spurt to take a 13-point advantage to the locker room at the half. Petrakova was held to just four points in the period, but freshman guard Charles poured in 15 points and 5-5 from the three-point line.
Denver continues the league schedule with its fifth game on the road at North Texas on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. (MT).
