State Police say they're going to have extra troops out on Thursday, monitoring the roads as the winter precipitation moves our way.
Already, by late Wednesday night, temps were dropping below freezing and if you're going to hit the road, police and car mechanics stress two words: "be prepared."
"Maintain before- before the problem hits us in the cold," Dean Hebert said. "We want to make sure to get prepared for winter."
Hebert and his crew of mechanics at Herbert's Automotive already have a full-shop. He says the cold weather can wreak havoc on your car.
"Everything when it gets cold, has a lot more bind on it," Hebert said.
The cold weather also adds a little more bind on you as a driver.
"One of the biggest problems we've had in the past is the black ice on the bridges and the roadways," State Trooper Stephen Hammons said.
Experts suggest taking classes for cold weather- knowing what to and what not to do in certain situations is a must. Black ice for example:
"Don't break." Hammons says, "let your foot off the accelerator."
Tips from the pros that might keep you away from the repair shop.
But if you do spot some black ice...
"Let us know right away what road you're on." Hammons says, "that way we can get some help out there to you."
