Hahnville football coach Lou Valdin said during the last three years he's seen a lot more of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on his campus.

Valdin credits the arrival of coach Rickey Bustle for the Ragin' Cajuns increased recruiting awareness at not only his school, but others as well in the talent-rich river parishes area.

That improved visibility resulted in what Valdin believes is his first player to choose UL-Lafayette when defensive end Chris Lanaux committed to the Cajuns.

"They hadn't really recruited down this way,'' Valdin said of UL-Lafayette. "That's a shame because we're in the middle of a lot of talent. You can leave here go across the river and there's the West Bank. But that's a credit to coach Bustle and his staff. They really sold Chris. … They really wanted him. Everyone seemed to be happy.''

The addition Lanaux, a 6-foot-2, 225-pounder who is academically qualified, pushes UL-Lafayette's commitment total to six. He's also the Cajuns second in-state pledge along with Parkview Baptist's Jacob Lennox.

Lanaux, who also had scholarship offers from Louisiana Tech and UL-Monroe and received interest from Tulane, Southern Mississippi and Memphis, was a three-year starter for Hahnville, which captured the Class 5A state title in 2003. He helped the Tigers to a 27-1 record the past two years, ending with a state quarterfinal loss to Slidell this season.

Lanaux was voted first team All-District 6-5A as a senior with 45 solo tackles and 19 assists. He led Hahnville in sacks with 16, registered 15 tackles for losses and recovered two fumbles. He could play either outside linebacker or defensive end and handle long-snapping duties in college, Valdin said.

"At first he was hoping for Southern Miss,'' Valdin said. "But coach Bustle came in and did a great job on the home visit and Chris told me he was ready to commit to them. He hasn't wavered and a lot of other people have come in.''

    Lanaux commits to Ragin' Cajuns

LOUISIANA La. – It sounds simple, but the most important factor in Chris Lanaux’s commitment decision was just being wanted.

“You want as a player to go somewhere where they really want you,” Lanaux said, “where you’re first on their list.”

Lanaux was a big part of the Louisiana’s football recruiting list, and the defensive end from Hahnville added his name to the Ragin’ Cajuns’ commitment list late this week when he gave head coach Rickey Bustle a verbal pledge.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Lanaux is the ninth commitment to the Cajuns’ 2005 recruiting class and the first as a defensive front-seven player.

“Coach Bustle told me they like their defensive ends to just rush the passer,” Lanaux said, “and I fit in perfect there. He and coach (Tim) Rebowe said they want to put a lot of pressure on the passer.”

Lanaux did that for Hahnville’s powerhouse program, recording 16 sacks and 48 solo tackles as a senior in earning All-District 6-5A honors and being named to the New Orleans Times-Picayune’s prestigious All-Metro squad.
