And like Skip Bertman said when LSU came to the Tigue years ago... much to the chagrin of LSU fans... "now we know what it is like for other teams to come to Alex Box and play in front of a huge hostile crowd... we've never experienced that before". Bertman was told by a booster that those comments shouldn't have been made. Bertman told him, "it was the damn truth". _

I remember this game - I was standing on the back of a truck tailgate along the right field parking lot listening to it on the radio and trying to see what I could. The worst part of the night was having to smell the food coming from the cooking club in right field. If any of you guys on here are a part of that... props to you! That is some good stuff.

Sure. The two rule changes that have had the most damaging effect at Tulane are:

1. The transfer rule where a player has to sit out a year when they transfer. With Tulane's tuition being close to 55k a year they used to target transfers who could afford one or two years of tuition but not three or four years. If this rule had been in place - all americans such as Shooter Hunt and Micah Ownings would have never been at Tulane.

2. The scholarship rule where if a player gets any kind of scholarship they must get at least 25%. This also hurts. No longer can Tulane give a lot of players 10% or 20% schollies and a few 85% and 90%. So in reality you have a lot less players on scholarship and tulane must now not only try to find talented players to fill out the roster but RICH talented players who can afford to pay the 55k a year tuition.

On top of that the MLB draft has probably killed them more than Katrina or these rule changes (although the rule changes have had something to do with getting killed in the draft). They have lost 4 legitimate freshman all americans to the draft.

The draft hurts tulane more than state schools because they can't sign 15 players like LSU does because they can't find 15 guys who will be able to afford Tulane on a 25% scholarship, so if they lose a player via the draft, it's like losing 3-4 for another school.

Are you talking about commits to Tulane being taken in the draft? Once there, they'd have to play three years before being eligible for the MLB.

Not talking about guys once they get on campus. I am talking about high school commitments that opt for the pay day of pro ball over college. Tulane has had some commits get crazy money thrown at them over the last few years (based on thier draft slot).

For example over the last couple of years Tulane has lost two guys drafted in the 15th and 16th rounds when they were each offered over a million dollars. Lost another that was drafted in the 13th round for 700k. And another guy that was drafted in the 15th round for what he called "life changing money". Pretty crazy stuff.

Understand ALL the reasons why ToLame is struggling to compete. But aren't all the following private schools experiencing the same recent changes/problems and handling them more sucessfully; Baylor, Rice, TCU, Vanderbilt, Miami, St John's, San Diego, Colleg of Charlston, Stanford, Wake Forest (they are back).. to name a few... Why do you REALLY think ToLame has not adapted to the changes and is struggling to build a consistent winning program similar to the aforementioned schools?

I already said that I think that it is coaching/recruiting and not having any back up plans when recruits opted for pro ball. I realize that it is hard to find talented guys willing to go to a school with 55k price tag but as a coach YOU HAVE to find a way to win ...

But to say that the ten schools that you mentioned are all having more success than tulane is very questionable. If you take a 5 year snapshot of all these programs - the worse five year span in the jones era (not including 2005 when they started and finished the year with the number 1 rpi in the country) - tulane has performed better than a couple of teams on that list and are about the same with about half of those teams.

But I would agree that the trend of that program is going down because if you take a ten year snap shot of the programs on your list only two are better than Tulane - Rice and Miami.

Who are the other top 2 teams in the conference? Will USA build a competitive program with their new Coach from South Carolina?
