Who would have guessed Pima Community College football player Mike Walczak and Storm head football coach Jeff Scurran would be parting ways in Texas more than 10 years after they first met?
Walczak and Scurran have a history that dates to when Walczak was a youngster. Scurran, who was head football coach at Sabino High School at the time, became familiar with Walczak through his football camps.
"He was our ball boy," Scurran said. "We wanted him to know that football was really his sport with that size and movement."
Walczak was well over 6 feet feet and weighed more than 200 pounds by the time he reached high school.
"He could throw the ball 60 to 70 yards in the air and he could catch the ball," Scurran said. "I would have loved to have made him a tight end, but he had to lose 50 pounds. He didn't like that."
Walczak is listed at 6-5 and 330 on the Pima roster. East Carolina, Oregon State and Louisiana-Lafayette are among the schools interested in him.
